IHSAA football Week 1 games of the week previews: Marian, Mishawaka highlight openers

SOUTH BEND — Week 1 of the 2023 Indiana high school season kicks off Friday. Here are the Tribune's games of the week for Friday, Aug. 18:

Mishawaka Marian Knights vs. Mishawaka Cavemen

When/where: Friday 7 p.m. ET at Steele Stadium, Mishawaka.

Series: Mishawaka leads 18-6 after 38-0 victory Aug. 19, 2022 at Marian.

∎ Coaches: Marian, Mike Davidson 43-20 entering sixth season. … Mishawaka, Keith Kinder 45-15 entering sixth season.

Last season: Knights lost their last five games, including 26-14 at West Noble in Class 3A-Sectional 26 opening round, to finish 2-8 after three consecutive seasons reaching the Class 3A northern semistate. … Cavemen went 8-1 in regular season and then beat South Bend Adams (35-6) and Concord (38-17) for Class 5A-Sectional 11 title before losing 41-27 to Fort Wayne Snider in regional championship to finish 10-2.

Extra points: Marian ranked 14th in Indiana Football Coaches Association Class 3A poll; Mishawaka 7th in IFCA Class 5A poll. … Knights return QB Bryce LaSane, RB Leopino Sete and DE Kaleb Johnson. … Cavemen led by QB Brady Fisher, WR/DB Trey Thomas and LB Jackson Snyder.

When/where: Friday 7 p.m. ET at Don J. Bunge Field, Bremen.

Series: Bremen leads 25-8 but LaVille has won the last six meetings, including 42-0 on Aug. 19, 2022 at Lakeville.

Coaches: LaVille, Jeff Kaiser 0-0 entering first season. … Bremen, Jordan Leeper 49-33 entering eighth season.

Last season: In Will Hostrawser’s last season as head coach, Lancers went 9-0 in the regular season, winning Hoosier North Conference title, and then beat Whiting 51-6 in Class 2A-Sectional 33 opening round before losing 28-6 to eventual state runner-up Andrean in sectional semifinal to finish 10-1. … Bremen, which went 5-4 during the regular season, beat Wheeler (35-21) and Lake Station (53-7) before losing Class 2A-Sectional 33 championship game 56-13 to Andrean to finish 7-5.

Extra points: LaVille ranked No. 10 in IFCA Class 2A poll; Bremen unranked. … Lancers led by QB Lucas Plummer, LB Jon Neese and WR/DB Collin Czarnecki. … Lions return QB Silas Laidig, WR Tyrus Graverson and WR Reece Greene.

Penn Kingsmen vs. Valparaiso Vikings

When/where: Friday 8 p.m. ET at Viking Field, Valparaiso.

Series: Penn leads 25-9 after 35-6 victory last Aug. 19, 2022 at TCU Freed Field ended three-game losing streak to Valparaiso.

Coaches: Penn, Cory Yeoman 198-54 entering 21st season. … Valparaiso, Bill Marshall 52-11 entering sixth season.

Last season: Kingsmen went 7-2 in regular season, winning Northern Indiana Conference East-West Division crown, but lost 35-7 to Carroll (Fort Wayne) in Class 6A-Sectional 2 semifinal game. … Vikings went 6-3 in regular season and then won Class 6A-Sectional 1 title with road victories at LaPorte (42-3) and Chesterton (14-7) before beating Merrillville 15-14 in regional, Fort Wayne Snider 22-21 (OT) in northern semistate and Whiteland 35-31 in Class 5A state championship.

Extra points: Vikings ranked No. 1 in IFCA preseason Class 5A poll; Kingsmen No. 11 in Class 6A poll. … Kingsmen led by QB Nolan McCullough, RB Jake Balis and DL Rylan Frazier. … Vikings’ returnees include QB Justin Clark, RB Travis Davis and OT Matt Hofer.

Hammond Bishop Noll Warriors vs. South Bend Clay Colonials

When/where: Friday 7:30 p.m. ET at Clay Field, South Bend

Series: First meeting.

Last season: Both teams limped through winless seasons. … Warriors went 0-8 in regular season before losing 46-7 at Lake Station in Class 2A-Sectional 33 opener and have lost 16 straight since 33-28 victory over Calumet Christian in 2021 season opener. … Colonials went 0-10, losing 55-0 in Class 3A-Sectional 26 opener at Jimtown, and now have lost 28 straight games since 7-0 victory at Osceola Grace in 2020 season opener.

Coaches: Bishop Noll, Tyler Milby 0-0 in first season. … Clay, Darius Mitchell 1-28 in fourth season.
