Huntley rolls season-best 824 series, ladies association sets new record in Corning

To say that Jason Huntley found the lanes to his liking this week at Crystal Lanes during action in the Sun Legends Grille Mixed League would a bit of an understatement. He didn’t just like them, he completely dominated them.

When all was said and done, Jason was sitting on an 824 series and taking back the household throne that was being worn by a certain college freshman.

More often than not, Jason spends a great deal of time in the 1-3 pocket. This night, he was there pretty much the whole evening. He opened the session with a 286 game. He followed that with a 259 effort and he actually lost a couple of pocket hits. Game three was a strike every frame but one as he finished with a 279 for his 824 series. It’s the highest series of the season at Crystal Lanes and Jason joins Jeff Crawford (808) in that exclusive 800 club.

Although Jason stole most of the spotlight in the Legends League, Shelley Focht grabbed a sliver of the bright lights when she registered her first-ever 500 series on games of 157, 164 and 190 for a 511 series.

Local ladies make a little 700 history

For the first time in the history of the local ladies bowling association, eight different ladies have cracked the 700 series barrier in a single season. This week, Gwen Bain and Cheryl Rice both reached 700 and they were the 7th and 8th different ladies to roll a 700 series this season. Check the season honor roll below for a complete listing.

Gwen led the ladies this week with her 712 series in the Joey’s Contracting Mixed League. And she did it the hard way. After opening with a respectable 193 game, she turned on the after burners. Game two was a 240 effort and just a prelude to an awesome finish. She rang up 11 of 12 strikes for a 279 game and her 712 series.

In that same league, Deon Frost popped a 663 series and teammate Anita Gennosa knocked down a 612. In Deon’s third game, she opened with a spare and then took it off the sheet for a 290 game. No surprise there.

Cheryl Rice, who is no stranger to 700, got on the board this season in the Giardina Building & Remodeling Ladies League with 700 right on the button. After pounding the pocket to the tune of 255 and 244, Cheryl got just enough with a 201 final game for her seven. And history is made.

In the same league, the aforementioned trio of Deon Frost, Anita Gennosa and Gwen Bain posted scores of 632, 618 and 616 respectively. Anita completed her six trifecta with a 618 set in the Gary Cortright Memorial Mixed League.

But, hold on — we’re not done with the ladies and 600s. Hailey Blencowe continued her domination of the pins in the Savona Storage Ladies League. Despite a lull in her second game of the night (a 183), Hailey offset that with a 221 opener and 268 nightcap to finish with a 672 series.

A couple of gals turned in sixes in the Jubilee Foods Mixed League. Heather Farr popped a 243 game on her way to a 660 series and Kayla Blanford recorded her first 600 series in the local association the hard way. After kicking off the night with a 149 struggle, it was lights out for the pins. She came back with games of 233 and 247 for a 629 series. That’s impressive. Jean Orchowski put the lid on the lady sixes this week with a 601 set in the Ruth Briggs Memorial Mixed League.

Farr claims runner-up honors for the men

Runner-up honors for the men this week goes to Al Farr and his effort in the Hatfield Real Estate League. Al opened the night with a 259 game and then added scores of 278 and 247 for a 784 series.

Teammate Ron Bush began with a pair of 245s before blowing the triplicate patch with a 247 game for a 737 set. In the same league, Jason Huntley capped a 724 with a 288 game while Doug McGinnis tossed a 718 and Jared Kucko came away with a 709 total.

Bill Bauman paced a six-pack of seven shooters in the Joey’s Contracting Mixed League with a 761 series on games of 266, 237 and 258. Teammates Jim Pitts and Al Farr tossed scores of 739 and 723 respectively while Nate Johnson’s 723 set featured a 298 game and Jeff Crawford cashed in a 717 series. The sixth 700 was Gwen Bain’s 712 as mentioned earlier.

There was a quartet of 700s in the Tire World of Corning Men’s League. Chad Farr led the way here with a 760 series that was highlighted by a 278 game. Not far behind him was Mike Brewster and his 755 set with a 279 game while Al Farr posted a 726 and Scott Bradley checked in with a 708 series.

In other men’s action this week, Ben Weiskopff topped the Addison Men’s League with a 758 while Rick Stewart joined him with a 738 and Trey Potter’s 747 flew away with honors in the Cortright League.

Stermer leads seniors

John Sterner led a nine unit 600 series parade in the Chilson-Wilcox Senior Men’s League with a 672. After loading up a 275 first game, John coasted home with games of 194 and 203 to earn senior scoring honors for the week. Mike Goltry three-deuced (227-225-205) a 657 series while Bruce Stanton rode a 246 game to a 643 set and Don Pierce capped a 740 total with a 246 game.

Mike Hughson’s 267 first game led him to a 629 series while Mike Dunn capped a 615 set with games of 225 and 234. A 605 series for Tom Sirios and John Olson’s 602 set capped the 600 scoring in the C-W League.

In other senior action, Mike Stanley paced the Striking Seniors Mixed League with a 636 series that featured a 237 and he was joined by John Olson’s 601 set. Don Pierce closed out the senior sixes when he capped a 618 series with a 247 game in the Go-Getters Mixed League.
