What Hubert Davis said after UNC’s loss to Clemson

The North Carolina Tar Heels have lost two of their last three games, falling to Clemson in Chapel Hill on Tuesday. It marked the second straight Tuesday the Tar Heels were upset. Their lead in the Atlantic Coast Conference is down to one game.

From the start, UNC struggled, falling behind 15-2. While North Carolina battled back, it never felt as though it was in control — even when the score was tied at 70.

The loss drops UNC to 18-5 overall and 10-2 in ACC play with another tough road game in Miami looming. I wouldn’t say it’s time to panic, but there is cause for concern after these two losses.

As UNC gears up for Miami, let’s see what Hubert Davis had to say after his team’s loss.

On this letdown being a concern?

“I mean, you know, again, it’s how you react and how you respond. And, you know, we’ll go back to work and as I said before, there’s two things that you can do. You can whine and complain and point fingers and make excuses, or you can get back up and move forward and join the fight. And for us, it’s never a choice. It’s a requirement for us to get back up and let’s get back to work.”

On missing Seth Trimble

“Seth, his athleticism and his energy. The way that he can defend, having another guy on the perimeter that from an offensive standpoint, his ability to be able to attack the basket and have another guard out there. Yes, we would have loved to have Seth available. But the way that Clemson played and the way that we played I’m not sure if that would have been any different. You just really have to tip your hat and congratulate Clemson on what they were able to do tonight.”

On calling a quick timeout

“I mean, I really didn’t want to call the timeout there. I don’t know what else. I mean, we were down 15-2, that’s obvious. We were down 15-2 because they were playing harder than us. That’s obvious. I don’t know what a timeout telling them we need to play harder does, but we regrouped and understood that we needed to pick up our energy and effort. And we did and we got back into the game and we just weren’t able to finish it.”

On being tied at 70 ... feel like they letup?

“I don’t think we let up. I just think down the stretch, that’s when the discipline and details have to be even tighter. You have to execute on the offensive end. I think we had the ball 70-70 all, and we turned the ball over. They scored; they got offensive rebounds. We fouled them; we put them on a free throw line. And those are things down the stretch that you just can’t have.”

On energy lacking ... how do you snap out of it?

“Well, I checked them at practice. Checked them in both practices and shootaround today. You know, the importance of attention to detail. We always talk about reacting and responding and when things don’t go your way and the importance of two things. Always showing up to work and not being perfect, nobody’s perfect, but also when you show up to work, your job and your responsibilities is to be the best that you can be.”

On how teams are playing RJ Davis lately

“I don’t want to say that they’re beating him up. But I mean, obviously, the year that RJ has had, he gets a lot of attention and they’re doing a lot of things defensively, making it hard for him just to be able to catch the ball. And so we’ve got to tweak and pivot and alter and change some things to be able to get them the ball in some different spots. But you’re right, I would say the last couple games teams have been very physical with him and done a lot of things defensively, not just individually but as a team to make it very difficult for him to get free.”

On message to the team going into the game

“Well, we were able to be successful on Saturday and we had a game here on Tuesday. I just, you know, just a game in a regular season and we needed to move forward and continue to grow and continue to get better. And that was my message. You know, it doesn’t matter who we play, there is a schedule out there and we have eight more games left and the teams that we have to play those are the teams that we have to prepare for and play against. It falls in line with all the things that I say about keeping your eyes straight ahead and ignore the sideshow distractions and focus on what is real and what is real is our improvement and how we grow as a team.”

On defensive rebounding in second half

“Well, I mean, they’re a really good rebounding team and they’re very physical. And one of the things you have to do is you have to make contact first and if you don’t, you’re gonna get pinned underneath the basket. And Ian (Schieffelin) and PJ (Hall), they’re men and they’re physicality is real. And if you don’t match it or surpass it, you just have no chance in terms of keeping them off the offensive glass and they played extremely well tonight. And they knew that they would.”
