HS Roundup: Lely upsets Barron Collier in district soccer, Mariner hoops downs Gateway
FRIDAY
BOYS BASKETBALL
Mariner 75, Gateway 42: The Tritons started hot and never cooled off, running away with a comprehensive road victory on Friday night.
With the win, Mariner, a team that has played one of the toughest schedules in Southwest Florida, handed the Eagles their third loss of the season.
“Teams are getting ramped up for district play and the playoffs, so for us to come on the road, beat a good team – it’s no more or less important than every other game – but it means just a bit more at the end of the year,” Mariner head coach Ryan Hercek said.
Mariner sprinted out to a double-digit lead before the Eagles were able to get on the board.
The team flourished in almost every category – ball movement, forcing turnovers, crashing the boards – you name it.
Even after Gateway had their best run of the night, scoring 10 consecutive points in the 3rd quarter to cut the Mariner lead to 35-29, the Tritons responded immediately by putting up the next 12 points.
Senior guard Marcus Kelley Jr. facilitated much of the action, along with Corey Hunter, who finished with a team-high 18 points.
“If you look at their stats, it’s not like they’re jumping off the page scoring, but it is a full stat sheet of points, rebounds, assists, steals, leadership that you can’t put on stat sheets, and that’s what (Kelley) does for us,” Hercek said.
Kelley finished with 15 points, while Kelvin Jimenez and Justin Lewis scored 15 and 12 points, respectively.
“I’ve seen this group evolve over the last four years,” Hercek said. “We’re a senior-heavy team. They’ve continued to get better and just, in the season, we’re continuing to really hit a nice stride right now.”
It was a game to forget for the Eagles, who struggled getting their shots to fall, turned the ball over often and had trouble guarding Mariner in the paint.
Senior Tavian Cook led Gateway with 18 points. No other player on the Eagles scored more than 5 points in the loss, which snapped a streak of seven wins in a row.
Hercek was encouraged to see his team putting things together at the right time of the season. At 14-8, they’re unbeaten in every home and road game with each of their eight losses coming at neutral site tournaments, including the City of Palms in December.
“If you’re going to hit a stride, this is when you want to do it,” he said. “I will give up the first couple weeks of the season to play better at the end of the season every single year.”
