Naples DB Faustin to sign with Auburn: Naples High School celebrated defensive back Kensley Faustin's upcoming signing Thursday. While he can't officially finalize his letter of intent until Dec. 20, the crowd that gathered seemed appropriate for an athlete that is by most people’s accounts special, both on and off the gridiron.

Faustin will play at Auburn University, assuring that his storied football career will continue next fall with the alma mater of Charles Barkley, Cam Newton, Frank Thomas and Bo Jackson.

Faustin is used to big accolades already. Faustin was a two-time FACA All-District First Team defensive player and was the 2023 FACA Player of the Year.

He had 140 tackles in his career as a Golden Eagle with 20 career pass break-ups, and his eight career interceptions are the fourth-most all-time by a Naples player. He will also play in the annual Adidas All-American game this year. Last year as a junior, he was an All-State Team honorable mention.

“It feels great to accomplish this, and to share this accomplishment with family and friends,” Faustin said. “I liked Auburn University because they will give me the opportunity to play early. Plus, Auburn has a lot of tradition, so that played a part in my decision.”

Faustin, who plans on studying psychology at Auburn, drew praise from Naples coach Rick Martin for selecting Auburn on his own.

“Kensley is a rare sort of person in that he knew what he wanted all along,” Martin said. “He chose Auburn all by himself. I didn’t have a whole lot to do with it, other than support his decision. This is an absolute blessing to share in a day like this with him.”

TUESDAY

Girls Basketball

Gulf Coast 56, Barron Collier 33: After recently notching a 70th straight win against a Collier County opponent, it didn’t take long for the Gulf Coast girls basketball team to pave the way for No. 71 Tuesday night.

The Sharks began the game with an overpowering 16-5 run and moved on to a victory over Barron Collier in the Shark Tank.

Gulf Coast (7-2) had plenty of big offensive stars. Alex McDonough scored 16 points. Lilly Fultz scored 14 and Kali Cleary dropped in 12 points.

The Sharks won for the seventh time in the last eight games. In winning its district opener, Gulf Coast led 27-10 at halftime.

“It’s always good to beat Barron, and to do it by a big margin is rewarding,” said Gulf Coast coach Mark Woodruff said. “We lost a tough game Saturday (to Charlotte), so we wanted to set the tone early, and get back to playing the way we usually play. We definitely set the tone tonight.”

The Sharks hurt Barron Collier (7-3) mostly by cutting to the basket for inside points.

“We came out attacking. That was our mentality for the game,” Woodruff said. “We went to the rim constantly and put pressure on the other team. We played a great game defensively. Our guards really put on the pressure. The key to Barron is to take away Peyton (Hefflefinger). And we did a really good job on her. We took her out of the game, and that really stymied their offense.”

Barron Collier coach Mike Hamburg did not mince words about the Cougars after the game.

“I thought we came out with no intensity,” said Hamburg. “We struggled to score. We were intimidated and we played as lousy as we could in the first half. When you play a good team, and you don’t come ready to play, you get your butt kicked.”

The loss broke the Cougars’ six-game winning streak.

“Gulf Coast played hard defense, but in the first four or five minutes of the game, we turned the ball over like in a tennis match,” Hamburg said. “We dropped some passes and made really bad passes. Our defense was probably as bad as I’ve seen it in years. That was the difference early on.”

The Sharks had caught the Cougar defense off-guard early in building up a 16-2 lead. Hamburg felt one key was the Sharks were allowed too many shots in the paint.

Sheila Forbes led the Cougars with 20 points in the loss.

“I can give us credit in that we played hard in the fourth quarter,” Hamburg said. “But in this game, you’ve got to play 32 minutes, and we only played eight. We’ve got a big game against Aubrey Rogers coming up, and that will test the mental toughness of this team. If we come and compete like we did tonight, we are going to be in trouble.”

MONDAY

Girls Basketball

Evangelical Christian 70, Aubrey Rogers 31: In a battle of undefeated teams Monday night between Aubrey Rogers and Evangelical Christian, the Sentinels yet again showed the team the rest of Southwest Florida is chasing.

The Sentinels (9-0) had four girls in double figures as they blew past the Patriots 70-31, handing Aubrey Rogers (6-1) the first defeat in program history.

Jadah Toombs led the way for ECS with 17 points, while Maddie O'berski scored 14 points, Kellisia Grant 13, and Arielle Marc 12.

“Our kids are playing really well now,” ECS coach Dwayne Donnell said. “Defensively, we are able to stop teams really well right now. We’re playing fast with the transition. Aubrey Rogers is an excellent team, but tonight we played a little bit better.”

Donnell is impressed that the first-year Patriots are off to a very good start.

“Defensively, I think we wore them down with our depth,” Donnell said. “We were able to play nine kids tonight. We had good quality time with players from the bench, so we’re excited about that. We’re also excited about the tempo and that we are able to make people play fast.”

Patriots coach Serena Hampton handled the loss philosophically.

“It was definitely disappointing. We had prepared as well as possible, but ECS is very good at what they do,” Hampton said. “For us, it was a wake-up call. We saw what our weaknesses are and being able to show our strengths. At the end of the day, it’s a tough loss.”

Both teams want to work on several things before and during the Christmas break. For ECS, that includes a trip to a holiday tournament in Tampa Bay.

“We will play a team from Illinois, Arizona, and California,” Donnell said. “They’re probably going to be whipping our butts good, but it’s something we can learn from. You have to play good competition, and we had good competition today, even though it doesn’t show on the scoreboard. Aubrey Rogers has some big girls inside, which is something we hadn’t seen before. That gave us a chance to know our weaknesses, and hopefully, we can correct our weaknesses and get better each day.”

Aubrey Rogers is adept at the press on defense, forcing turnovers, and slowing down the ball, and Hampton is confident the Patriots can continue to win if they just play their game.

“We just have to do us,” said Hampton. “We just have to play the Patriot way. We know what we have to do. We do it in practice every day, and we want to emulate it in the game.”
