HS Roundup: John Glenn girls score key win in early MVL showdown

Another week of high school sports is upon us, and here are the local results:

SOCCER

John Glenn girls 2, Tri-Valley 0: Becca Spohn and Riley Zamensky each scored in the first half, as the Muskies picked up a key Muskingum Valley League win on Thursday night.

Spohn opened the scoring off an assist by Estelle Matheney with 37:24 left in the first half then Zamensky knocked in a direct kick with 1:50 left for John Glenn (2-0, 1-0 MVL).

Faith Lemon made one save on two Tri-Valley shots, while Gabbi Matz had four stops for the Scotties (0-1 MVL).

Tri-Valley boys 8, Heath 1: The Scotties scored four goals in each half to open their season with a win on Thursday night. No other information was available.

John Glenn boys 6, Rosecrans 3: The Bishops took a 3-2 lead with 25 minutes left in the match, but the visiting Muskies scored four unanswered in the final 9 minutes to pick up their second win of the season.

Will Nicolozakes knocked in four goals to lead the John Glenn attack.

Grady Labishak's corner kick found James Goggin for the go-ahead goal, making it 3-2 Rosecrans. Labishak also had a pair of first-half goals and Steven Porter made 16 saves.

Maysville boys 6, St. Clairsville 3: Wyatt Mynes scored four times and assisted a goal and Cam Parker added two goals and two assists, as the Panthers built a 4-2 halftime lead in improving to 2-0 on Tuesday.

Cyrus Melick and Cam Morrison also had assists in the win.

West Muskingum boys 3, Caldwell 1: The Tornadoes improved to 2-0 with a win on Tuesday, but no other information was available.

Zanesville boys 0, Newark 0: Blue Devil keeper Steven Morrison stopped a pair of penalty kicks to help preserve a scoreless tie with the rival Wildcats.

Philo boys 14, Shenandoah 1: Andrew VanMeter tied the Electric school record with six goals in a game and assisted two more, as Philo earned its first win of the year.

Gage Wickham chipped in four goals, Brycen Wolfe scored twice and Brent McManes also scored for the Electrics.

John Glenn girls 4, Rosecrans 0: Becca Spohn broke up a scoreless tie with an assist from Riley Zamensky with 27:50 left in the match, as the Muskies opened their season with a win on Tuesday.

Zamensky, Layken Cochran and Jillian 'Bean' Sowers also scored in the second half for John Glenn, while Zamensky and Kira Kaiser assisted on the final two goals.

Faith Lemon made two saves on two Rosecrans shots for the shutout, while Rosecrans keeper Kate Ward had five saves.

Watkins Memorial girls 6, Zanesville 0: The Lady Devils fell to the Warriors in their LCL opener on Wednesday, and no other information was available.

John Glenn boys 5, Cambridge 1: The host Muskies took the victory in the season opener on Friday over the visiting Bobcats in boys soccer action.

Kanon Riehl knocked in three goals, as the Muskies scored four goals in the second half to earn a season-opening win. Markel Villapalos scored the only goal for the Bobcats in the loss. Keeper Rylan Mathews finished with 18 saves.

River View boys 12, Minerva 1: The Black Bears exploded for seven first-half goals in Monday's win over the Lions.

Camden Albertson knocked in a hat trick with two assists and Parker Andrews added two goals to lead the RV offensive barrage. Remington Graham had a goal and two assists, Hayden Walters and Blaze Klein a goal and an assist each, Carter Knicely, Derek Beitzel, Nick Phillips and Cash Guilliams also scored and Cael Summers, Brody Stevens and Micah Hardesty each added an assist. Layton Massie added five saves in goal.

Ridgewood girls 1, Carrollton 1: Kathryn Kelley scored an unassisted goal, and keeper Keira Schrock had 17 saves, as the Generals posted a draw in their season opener on Monday.

GOLF

Philo 168, Rosecrans 200: AJ Layton and Derek Randolph shared medalist honors with 41 for the Electrics in a win on the par-35 back nine at Jaycees on Thursday.

Josh Gooden added 42 and Blake Hiles 44 for Philo, while Logan Brown had 43 and Evan Bauer 48 to lead the Bishops.

Sheridan boys 155, Fairfield Union 169: Medalist Owen Cain led the Generals with a 37, while Cody Hupp shot 38, Bryce Kelley a 39 and Canyon Daly a 41.

New Lex and River View golf: Medalist Caleb Kline carded a 42 and Thad Cox shot 49 for the Black Bears, who fell one golfer shy on earning a team score at Perry Country Club.

Hunter Heavener posted a 46 and Brandon Stevenson added a 50 for the Panthers, who had 203.

Coshocton 396, River View 400, Ridgewood 429: The Black Bears' Caleb Kline took medalist honors with an 80, while Carter Summers shot 91 to lead Coshocton to the Coshocton County Cup on Monday at River Greens.

Thad Cox added an 84 for River View, Coby Moore carded a 92 and Bransyn Dawson added a 95 for the Redskins; and Zach Evin posted a 91 to lead the Generals.

John Glenn girls second, Sheridan third at Lady Dawgs Invite: Addy Burris was the tournament runner-up with 76, and Abby McCullough shot 79 to lead the Muskies to a runner-up finish in the Tri-Valley Lady Dawg Invitational on Monday at Vista.

Morgan Wamer tied for fourth overall with a 78 and Ryan Satterfield tied for sixth with a 79 to pace the Generals.

Rosecrans & River View face off at Hickory Flats: Thad Cox took medalist honors with a 39 and Caleb Kline had a 40 for the Black Bears, who only had three players, as they took on the Bishops on Tuesday.

Evan Bauer carded a 46 and Jordan Joseph had a 58 for Rosecrans.

Gavin Gress took medalist honors with a 61, as River View won a Junior High Invite with a 287, while Colton Gress added a 63.

TENNIS

Beaver Local 3, Cambridge 2: Host Cambridge took a tough loss in Saturday's home opener on the new courts at Cambridge City Park.

Picking up wins for the Lady Bobcats were Emma Krise (2-6, 6-2, 6-3) and Reese Antill (6-7, 6-4, 6-3) in singles action.

“The Lady Bobcats showed much improvement from last season and strong character battling back to win two tough matches," CHS head coach Tim Gibson offered. "Reese Antill and Emma Krise both came back from down a set to secure the bobcats two wins. I’m so proud for both of them and all the others too."
