Hot shooting No. 8 Va. Tech overwhelms HPU women

Nov. 7—BLACKSBURG, Va. — Virginia Tech built a big lead early and crushed High Point University 94-55 in non-conference women's basketball before 6,113 at Cassell Coliseum on Monday.

After the unfurling of a banner signifying a trip to the Final Four last season, the No. 8 Hokies hit 14 of 16 shots, including all 10 2-point tries, in the first quarter as they went up 38-15. Led by All-American Liz Kitley hitting 12 of 17 shots and scoring 27 points in 26 minutes, Virginia Tech hit 35 of 61 field goal attempts as a team.

Matilda Ekh added 15 points while Georgia Amoree and Cayla King had 14 apiece. Kitley dragged 11 rebounds while Amoree dished nine assists. The taller Hokies finished with a 44-23 advantage on the boards.

Lauren Bevis and Nakayah Terrell scored 15 each for HPU. The Panthers went a perfect 16 of 16 from the free throw line but hit just 18 of their 58 field goal attempts.

HPU returns to action at home against Lees-McRae on Saturday at 2 p.m.
