Horizon Science Academy's Temidayo Owoyemi is OSU Wexner Medical Center Athlete of Week

In a vote that ended May 24, Dispatch.com readers selected the The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center high school Athlete of the Week for competitions that took place from before May 19.

This week's winner is Horizon Science Academy track and field athlete Temidayo Owoyemi.

Owoyemi finished first at the Division II district meet in shot put with a personal record of 39-7 and first in the discus with a personal record of 139-8. Her previous throw was 122-0.

Owoyemi received 61.9% of the vote and was followed by Olentangy Orange track and field athlete Mairin O'Brien, who had 35.8%, and Pickerington North track and field athlete Richard Simpson (2.4%).

O’Brien, the runner-up, was the District 2 champion in the 4x800, open 800 and 4x400 and was runner-up in the 1,600. She is also the first student at Orange to earn 12 varsity letters, earning them in cross country, basketball and track. She is a member of three relay records for Orange in the 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley and qualified for states in cross country this past fall and as a team member her junior year.

Simpson won the 100 (10.76), 200 (21.43) and 400 (46.97) in the Division I, District 1 meet. He was also a member of the first-place and regional-qualifying 1,600 relay (3:23.39).

Nominations are due Monday mornings for competitions that took place the previous week.

Anyone can nominate an athlete through Twitter tagging @BrianWhite13 or by email to bwhite1@dispatch.com.

Once athletes win during the regular season, they're not eligible to be back on the ballot until the postseason. Athletes who have not been a recipient of one of the weekly awards can be nominated more than once.
