History on This Day: Warriors’ Stephen Curry wins first MVP award
On May 4, 2015, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry claimed his first Most Valuable Player trophy to become the first player in franchise history to win since Wilt Chamberlain in 1960 when the team played in Philadelphia.
Curry averaged 23.8 points, 7.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds and two steals during the 2014-15 season. He converted on 48.7% of his shot attempts from the field, including 44.3% from 3-point range, and 91.4% from the free-throw line.
He drained a then-league record of 286 3-pointers on the season.
Behind the play of Curry, the Warriors amassed a league-best 67-15 record during the regular season. They would go on to win their fourth overall championship that year and first of three under head coach Steve Kerr after beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 4-2 in the NBA Finals.
The MVP season for Curry solidified his place among the greatest players to ever play. Of course, six years later, Curry is widely considered to be the best shooter of all time and is even in the MVP conversation again this season following his incredible display.
