Hilliard Davidson's Mitchell Davis is OSU Wexner Medical Center Athlete of Week

In a vote that ended May 3, Dispatch.com readers selected the The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center high school Athlete of the Week for competitions that took place from before April 28.

This week's winner is Hilliard Davidson baseball player Mitchell Davis.

Davis went 9 for 15 (.600) in four games with two home runs, seven RBIs and five run. He went 4 for 4 with a sacrifice fly in a win over Upper Arlington and drove in the go-ahead two runs to beat Hilliard Bradley.

Davis received 41.2% of the vote and was followed by Hilliard Darby track and field athlete Ashley Cornathan, who had 33.7%, Columbus Academy lacrosse player Hannah Simpson (8.1%), Worthington Kilbourne lacrosse player Rylee Steinbeck (7.7%), Grandview Heights softball player Taryn Lynaugh (5.3%) and Gahanna Lincoln softball player Grace Miller (4.1%).

Cornathan, the runner-up, won the shot put (38-7 1/4) and discus (127-05) in the Panther Invitational.

Simpson led her team to wins over 2023 Division II state champion Watterson and 2023 Division II state semifinalist Cincinnati Mariemont.  Against Watterson, she had 13 saves and two ground balls in a 9-8 win. Against Mariemont, she had 12 saves and one ground ball in an 11-8 win, including three saves from the 8-meter free position with less than three minutes to play in the game.

Steinbeck carries a 4.2 GPA, is a team leader, defends the opponent’s toughest player and scores two goals a  game.

Lynaugh drove in four of the team’s eight runs, including a walk-off triple, against Ready. For the week, she batted .650 in 22 plate appearances in six games, including eight singles, six doubles, three triples and 17 RBIs.

In five games, Miller went 11 for 14 (.786) with two home runs and three doubles. As a pitcher, she has allowed four earned runs with 22 strikeouts in 26⅓ innings.

Nominations are due Monday mornings for competitions that took place the previous week.

Anyone can nominate an athlete through Twitter tagging @BrianWhite13 or by email to bwhite1@dispatch.com.

Once athletes win during the regular season, they're not eligible to be back on the ballot until the postseason. Athletes who have not been a recipient of one of the weekly awards can be nominated more than once.
