Highlights from area cross country, cheer and dance and volleyball over the weekend

SIOUX FALLS — Watertown High School's competitive cheer squad won its division on Saturday in the Pierre Invitational.

The Arrows won 11 team division with an score of 236.5. Aberdeen Central was ninth at 173.0.

"The girls had a great routine. Our energy was up, we made good corrections in our tumbling and scored well in our pyramid," said WHS cheer coach Malory Hoffmann. "The girls always have fun in Pierre and enjoy the confidence a smaller meet gives them."

In the nine-team dance division, Aberdeen Central finished fourth (241.0) and Watertown fifth (240.75) in the grand champion standings. Host Pierre won with a 252.0 score.

Aberdeen Central took third in pom (248.5) and fifth in hip hip (233.5.) Watertown was fourth in both pom (246.5) and hip hop (235.).

"We performed a small clean routine," said Watertown dance coach Carolyn Fraher. "We had a few timing and spacing errors in both routines."

The Watertown and Aberdeen Central teams are scheduled to compete again on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at Brandon.

Cross Country

SIOUX FALLS — Three area runners recorded top-16 finishes and Watertown placed 14th in the girls division of the Augustana Twilight cross country meet on Friday.

Isabelle Bloker of Sioux Valley was second (17:51.89), seventh-grader Grace McElroy of Watertown 10th (18:54.92) and Ashlynn Batchelor of Milbank 16th (19:25.95) among 334 runners in the girls' 5,000-meter run.

Libby Castelli of O'Gorman (17:31.11) won the race and Brandon Valley took the team title with a score of 69. Watertown was 14th (448), Sioux Valley 15th (465), Milbank 26th (628) and Aberdeen Central 25th (672) among 34 teams.

"The girls raced well tonight. Having one in the top 10 was good to see and to finish as a team in the top half gives us some confidence going forward," said Watertown head coach Jenn McElroy.

Juan Gonzalez of Fremont (Neb.) won the 422-runner boys' 5,000 in 15:10.15. Payton Brown of Milbank led area runners by placing 18th (16:25.48.

Creighton Prepatory School won the team title with a score of 73. Aberdeen Central took 11th (391), Milbank 19th (545) Watertown 33rd (809), Estelline-Hendricks 39th (1,123) and Sioux Valley 42nd (1,198).

"This meet is always a fun and exciting meet. The kids love this one!," added McElroy. "This is the biggest race that most of them will run with an incredible atmosphere."

Volleyball

Aberdeen Central 3, Pierre 1

ABERDEEN — The Golden Eagles got back on track with a 20-, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-17 Eastern South Dakota Conference win on Saturday.

Aberdeen Central improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the ESD. Pierre fell to 3-1 and 0-1.

Grace Kuch tallied 15 kills and Lauryn Burckhard 14 for the Golden Eagles. Ayrlie Waldo and Emma Dohrer each contributed three aces and Taryn Nieman four blocks.

Reese Terwilliger led Pierre with 12 kills, three aces and two blocks. Abby Kropp added 11 kills and two aces, Elly Broers four aces and Makayla Sherwood two blocks.

Mobridge-Pollock 3, Belle Fourche 0

MOBRIDGE — Mobridge-Pollock upped its record to 4-0 with a 3-0 high school volleyball victory over Belle Fourche on Friday.

The Tigers won 25-13, 25-8 and 25-18.

Charley Henderson recorded three aces and six kills, Katy Kemnitz two aces and 13 assists, Grace Overland seven kills, Raelyn Aberle six kills, Ryli Thompson five kills and six digs, Sophia Overland nine assists and Regan Weisberg 13 digs for Mobridge-Pollock.

Belle Fourche was led by Mataya Ward, four aces and seven kills; Reese Larson, nine assists; and Jacie Baxendale, three blocks.
