High schools: Tokay wins girls regional wrestling title

Feb. 12—The Tokay High girls wrestling team clinched its eighth consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section Southern Regional Championship on Saturday, scoring 169 points to second-place Golden Valley's 148.

Lodi scored 106 points, second in Division I and seventh overall.

The Tigers had two individual champions, and qualified eight total wrestlers through to the SJS Masters Tournament next weekend at Stockton Arena. Lodi had one individual champion and qualified four wrestlers to the masters tournament.

The top eight in each weight class qualified to moved on.

For Tokay, Kelly Meehan won the 135-pound division, and Kayleen Tuavao won the 145-pound division, Maliah Gomez was runner up at 170, Shantel Ambriz was fourth at 105, Camilah Fajardo was fifth at 140, Olivia Hunt was seventh at 120, Skyla Rivera was seventh at 125, and Ziahni Moreno was seventh at 155.

For Lodi, Azaria Biegler was the 120-pound champion, Jocelyn Shelley was third at 115, Jayda Vansteenberge was fourth at 130, and Sarah Carpenter was fifth at 130.

The SJS Masters Tournament begins Friday at 9 a.m.

Girls Northern Regional

Galt High won the D5 standings in the Northern Regional with 72 points, with Liberty Ranch third at 53. Del Oro won the overall with 222.5 points.

Galt qualified three wrestlers to move on in Bailey Cathey, who was runner up at 125 pounds, Victoria Nuss, who placed sixth in the 110-pound bracket, and Adian Farren, who placed sixth at 130. Liberty Ranch also had two wrestlers move on in Veronika Shayhen, who was the runner up at 120 pounds, and Kaydince Silva, who placed eighth at 115.

Boys D1 Tournament

Tokay placed ninth with 90 points on Saturday, and Lodi was 18th with 51 points.

The Tigers moved five wrestlers on to the Masters tournament, with Vince Marin placing fourth in the 177-pound division, Christian Morales placing fifth at 115, Aiden Sweetman placing fifth at 217, Josiah Garcia sixth at 122, and Jason Quinones seventh at 159.

Lodi had three wrestlers move on in Ethan Warmerdam, fifth at 134, Joaquin Yepez, seventh at 146, and Grant Shipley, eighth at 159.

Boys D5 Tournament

Liberty Ranch placed 17th with 57 points on Saturday, and Galt finished with six points.

Liberty Ranch had one wrestler advance to the Masters Tournament when Wyatt Correia placed third in the 120-pound bracket. D-5 sends advances four wrestlers in each bracket. The Hawks had two more medal without moving on — Brandon Eckroth was fifth at 215, and Chalo Enriquez was sixth at 175.

Girls D3 playoffs: Liberty Ranch 9, Livingston 0

The fourth-seeded Hawks scored a blowout victory in their playoff opener on Saturday, ending No. 13 Livingston's season.

Liberty Ranch on Wednesday will face the winner of Monday's game between No. 5 Dixon and No. 12 Lathrop.

Boys D4 playoffs: Livingston 1, Liberty Ranch 0

The seventh seeded Hawks were shut out in the playoff opener on Friday, ending their season with No. 10 Livingston moves on to face No. 2 Dixon.

Top-seeded Galt, which had a first-round bye, will face No. 9 El Camino today.

Girls D5 playoffs: Argonaut 1, Galt 0

The third-seeded Warriors were shut out on Saturday in the first round of the playoffs, sending No. 6 Argonaut on to face No. 7 Summerville on Wednesday.

BASKETBALL

JV girls: Lodi 43, Tokay 31

Paige Buckley led the JV Flames with 25 points in Friday's victory, along with nine from Kylie Blum, and two each from Lacie Glissman, Camryn Cole, Maddie Galatsatos and Juliza Magana, and one from Khalayah Wright.

Lodi finished league play with a 6-2 record.

JV boys: Lodi 53, Tokay 39

Jonus Currington led the JV Flames with 13 points in Thursday's victory, along with 11 from Xavier Davis, 8 from Matt Biglieri, and strong defense from Noah Munoz and Noah Hufford. Lodi finished the season with a 17-11 record.
