High school swimming roundup: DeLand boys place ninth at Region 1-4A meet

DeLand and Spruce Creek competed at the Region 1-4A swim meet Saturday at Lake Brantley High School.

The Bulldogs ranked ninth in the boys standings with 82 points and 12th in the girls standings with 60 points. Spruce Creek’s boys placed 17th (18 points) and the girls 15th (35 points).

Piper Jemison tallied DeLand’s top two finishes, claiming sixth in the girls 100-yard butterfly (58.53) and 100-yard backstroke (1:01.10).

Its boys had two top-eight finishes. Massimo Brunacci grabbed seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.35. Brunacci, Gavin Brown, Carlos Mize and Jake Naumovitz also placed eighth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.37).

For the Hawks, the girls 400-yard freestyle relay team posted their best finish. Mackenzie Malone, Brooklyn Call, Ava Broome and Kirra Stone touched the wall in 3:58.25, good for 10th.

Rocco Wilson, Jake Lazo, Dewan Lodia and Kyle Kwong led their boys placements. The group was 12th in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.27).

The 4A state championships are scheduled for Friday at Florida Aquatics Swimming and Training in Ocala.
