Tuesday's scores

Volleyball

Fort Pierce Central d. South Fork 19-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23, 19-17: For the second season in a row, two of the Treasure Coast's top volleyball program provided a thriller that stuck to a familiar script.

Rallying from two sets down to win last year, Fort Pierce Central had to do the same Tuesday night and trailing 13-6 in the fifth set, the Cobras found a way led by 20 kills from Kailani Zezas and 19 from Sydney Corbett but one kill from an unlikely source keyed the victory.

With the Bulldogs leading 14-13 and serving for the match, Cobra junior libero and Virginia Tech commit Ivy Cooper managed to knock over an inauspicious ball in the middle of the point that landed just inside the baseline that extended the match.

Cooper, who finished the match with 38 digs, credited the fight in her teammates to have the poise to know they could stay in the match when it looked bleak after the first two sets.

"I think this shows a lot, how much we trust each other, our chemistry, our strengths, our weaknesses, how much we know each other's playing style and knowing what we're up against and how to work with it," Cooper said.

South Fork in the opening set immediately fell behind 6-0 but quickly settled in and grabbed control of the match with a first set win and did much of the same in the second set to hold a big advantage.

The attack for the Cobras kicked in for the third set and without star sophomore setter Azlyn Bass, working her way back from a broken ankle in the summer, sophomore Allison Buchmeyer and senior Kadiann Perry were able to settle in to set the offense in motion for Fort Pierce Central.

A tight fourth set was ended on a booming kill by Corbett to send the match to a deciding fifth set, which saw South Fork quickly jump ahead.

Bulldog sophomore Ava Bochenek recorded four kills and an ace to put South Fork up 13-6 before the Cobras began their comeback.

Fueled by a flurry of kills from Zezas, Fort Pierce Central had two match points opportunities that South Fork saved before the Cobras were able to get the job done.

Buchmeyer had 25 assists and Perry added 22 assists to go along with seven kills for Fort Pierce Central.

Bochenek led the Bulldogs with 14 kills, nine digs and three blocks and Aubrey Scammell added 10 kills and eight blocks. Ryan Connelly chipped in seven kills and four blocks, Hailee Curl added 17 digs and Brynn Burgk totaled 34 assists, 21 digs and five aces for South Fork.
