High school roundup: West Morgan opens season with win at Randolph

Aug. 26—HUNTSVILLE — Braxton Peters and Ti'Airrius Mosley torched the Randolph defense on Friday night, connecting for three long touchdown passes, as the West Morgan Rebels defeated the Raiders 41-20 to open the 2023 football season.

The teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter, with Jalen Fletcher scoring on a 24-yard run to give West Morgan a 7-0 lead before Randolph rallied to tie the game late in the opening quarter.

Peters found Mosley on touchdown passes of 42 and 36 yards in the second quarter, however, as West Morgan built a 20-7 halftime lead. A touchdown run by Jeremy Strong and a 49-yard touchdown pass from Peters to Mosley extended the West Morgan lead to 34-7 after three quarters.

Peters' final touchdown pass of the night, a 3-yard strike to Harrison Johnson, came in the fourth. Peters finished the game 15-of-18 passing for 190 yards. Mosley had eight catches for 164 yards and Fletcher rushed 17 times for 87 yards.

West Morgan (1-0) continues play next week at home against Ardmore.

Decatur Heritage 63, Section 15: Savarius Evans carried Decatur Heritage to a big opening-night win on Friday, rushing 15 times for 257 yards and six touchdowns as the Eagles rolled past Section.

Nash Thomas was 3-of-3 passing for 83 yards and one touchdown. Jackson Thomas caught two passes for 68 yards and a score and Jordan Davis had a rushing touchdown.

Decatur Heritage (1-0) travels to face Carbon Hill next week.

West Limestone 16, Ardmore 7: Easton Smith rushed for a pair of touchdowns as West Limestone opened the new season with a win over county foe Ardmore on Friday.

The West Limestone defense recorded a safety to bring the Wildcats' points total to 14.

West Limestone (1-0) continues play next week at Clements. Ardmore (0-1) plays at West Morgan.

In other games featuring area teams on Friday: Brewer defeated Hanceville 23-7, Plainview defeated Priceville 21-14, Clements beat Holly Pond 34-0 and Falkville defeated Vinemont 26-20.
