HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Upper Cape boys golf wins conference championship

The Upper Cape varsity boys golf team won the Mayflower League Conference Championship on Thursday during a tournament at Acushnet River Valley golf course. Matt Nawoichik led the champs as he shot a 73, while Asher Graff followed up with a 75. Zephyn Johnson and Tyler Kutil each shot an 80 for a team total of 308. The Rams won the tournament by 32 strokes.

The Rams ended the regular season with a 12-4 record, and was undefeated in league play (8-0). The Rams also won the State Vocational Championship last week. Nawoichik was named Player of the Year, and Coach Matt Lombard was named Coach of the Year.

Boys Golf

Nauset 251, Dennis-Yarmouth 302: Max St. Aubin led the way with a 38, while Zach Weiner followed up with a 39 to lead the Warriors (12-2). Jack Martin (41), Finn Mayhew (43), Chris Ross (43), and Logan Miller (47) also placed in the top six.

Connor Bosiak (41), James Mullen (50), Adam Ruder (51), Trey McPherson (52), Robbie McPhee (54), and Ryan Clarke (54) finished in the top six for Dennis-Yarmouth (2-10).

St. John Paul II 246, Rising Tide 290: Senior tri-captains Jack Carstensen and Matt Curley each shot a 37 to spark the Lions (17-1) to a win at the Bend nine at the Willowbend Club. Tri-captain Timmy Adams chipped in with a 40, while Ryan Amerault (41), Chris Heywood (43), Drew Richards (44) and Ollie Affonso (44) placed in the top six. The win lifted the Lions to their fourth consecutive Cape & Islands League Lighthouse Division crown with a 10-0 record in the League.

Old Rochester 239, Bourne 271: Luca Finton led the Canalmen (10-5) with a score of 42. Griffin Kelly (43), Ryan Burgess (45), Brett Lucier (45), Trevor Billard (46), and Dom Botino (50) finished out the scoring for Bourne.

Falmouth 232, Martha’s Vineyard 237: The Clippers (4-8) picked up the win over the Vineyarders (4-6).

Girls Volleyball

Nantucket 3, Sturgis West 0: The Whalers (8-4) swept the Navigators (6-3) in straight sets (25-13, 25-17, 25-11). Chloe Marrero led the offense with six kills, while Yahely del Rosario Gomez added 11 assists. Viktoria Todorova led the defense with 14 digs.

Barnstable 3, Lincoln-Sudbury Regional 0: The Red Hawks (12-2) had a sweep win (25-18, 25-18,25-19). Molly Gleason led the offense with 18 kills and two aces, and added nine digs, while Molly Fredo finished with 14 kills. Charlotte Sullivan had five kills and two aces, while Sadie Wellbeloved dished out 33 assists. On defense, Logan Hurwitz had a game high 12 digs, and Ashley Walantis (five digs) and Scout Johnson (four digs) also contributed.

Girls Soccer

Rising Tide 2, Cape Cod Academy 1: Jenna Marsh had 15 shots on goal and one found the back of the net for the Seahawks (3-6). Lili Shanahan had one shot on the field and nine saves in goal (2nd half), while Flynn Kayajan had six saves in goal.

St. John Paul II 6, Sturgis West 1: Addison Cheney notched a hat trick (25 goals on the year) and chipped in one assist to lead the Lions (8-2-1) attack. Raegan Dillon scored a goal and had three assists. Michaela Enright and Ella Cheney each scored once, while Natalia Traykovski added an assist. Ella Cheney played well in midfield and Devin Crofford, Meah Dalrymple, and Michaela Enright had a good game on defense for the Lions.

East Bridgewater 2, Mashpee 0: The Falcons (3-8) goalkeeper Norah Paolini had five saves in the loss.

Martha’s Vineyard 5, Barnstable 1: Ava Townes scored two goals to lead the Vineyarders (9-3) offense, while Eleanor Mone had a goal and an assist. Sydney Bruguiere and Reese Malowski (1st goal of the season) each scored one goal, while Emily Coogan and Talia Maccaferri each had one helper. Barnstable falls to 0-10.

Sandwich 4, Bridgewater-Raynham 1: Izzy Bar scored the first two goals of the game for the Blue Knights (7-4-1). Lily Hofmann scored a goal from 30 yards out, while Ayla Whitney scored on a corner kick. The defensive line of Ella Raymond, Ayla Whitney, Julia Sutton and Sophie Smalley turned away multiple attempts, while Sophia Wanat played well in net with multiple saves.

Falmouth Academy 4, Sturgis East 1: Faye McGuire and Julietta Marzot each scored twice for the Mariners (5-6). McGuire scored her brace in the first half, and Marzot in the second half, while Susanna Lowell played well on defense.

Nauset 1, Falmouth 0: Olivia Avellar scored the lone goal with a helper from Caroline Kennard for the Warriors' (9-2) win over the Clippers (4-6-2).

Nantucket 6, Dennis-Yarmouth 1: The Whalers (5-7) picked up the win over the Dolphins (1-12).

South Shore Tech 3, Cape Tech 1: The Crusaders fall to 0-9.

Boys Soccer

Upper Cape 4, Bristol Aggie 0: Senior captain Gideon Drury finished with a brace (two goals) and one assist to lead the Rams (10-1-1) to the win. Senior Ryan Besse and sophomore Luke Correira each scored a goal, while junior Sean Murphy and senior Jadon Barton each had one helper.

St. John Paul II 2, Sturgis West 0: Nico Sullivan netted a goal and provided an assist for the Lions (5-4-3) victory over the Navigators (1-8-1). Jose Aguilar also scored a goal, while the Lions defense was spearheaded by Cody Boghdan, Jay Imad, Henry Roy and Robin Martinez.

Cape Tech 2, South Shore Tech 1: Gabriel Martins scored one goal and had one assist for the Crusaders (4-6-2). Jace Clady found the back of the net once, while Rahvarion Smith dished out the assist to Martins' goal. Kyle De Freitas, Alex Malone, Daniel Colares, and goalkeeper Fabricio Camero all played well in the win.

Falmouth Academy 3, Sturgis East 2: Marcus Greco scored on two penalty kicks, including the winning goal, for the Mariners (6-4-1). Sasha Kaplenko scored the first goal off a rebound on a shot from Fletcher Parsons at 10 minutes. Christian Hanoian and Gus McGuire at center back, Ben Angell and Ezra Ackerman at wide back, and Marc Djikaev at defensive midfield played well.

Gabriel Codjoe scored both goals for the Storm (5-4-3). Freshman Brady Sheehan played the full game in replacement for an injured teammate, and Hogan Anderson played well on defense.

Barnstable 6, Martha’s Vineyard 1: Sophomore captain Marcelo Diamantino scored three goals, while captain Philipe Ribeiro scored another goal for the Red Hawks (5-3-4) win over the Vineyarders (6-5-1).

Nantucket 2, Dennis-Yarmouth 1: The Whalers (6-3-3) won a close matchup over the Dolphins (4-7-2). Jose Diaz jumped on a loose ball and converted the rebound on a shot from Jake Johnson for Nantucket. In the second half, Ryan Coleman scored on a header from a Calvin Guerra direct free kick, flicked on from Edin Vasquez. Aiden Congdon and Alex Ivalov split time in net for the Whalers.

Sandwich 5, Bridgewater-Raynham 1: Adam Klaiber had a brace to lead the Blue Knights (8-2-2), while Owen Woodard added one goal and one assist. Sam Hart and Matt Murray each found the back of the net once, Harry Delman dished out two assists, and Chase Collentro chipped in one assist.

Nauset 0, Falmouth 0: The Warriors (7-1-4) and the Clippers (2-7-2) ended in a draw.

Rising Tide 6, Cape Cod Academy 0: The Seahawks (1-8) were shutout.
