HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: St. John Paul II boys soccer net 12 goals for first win

The St. John Paul II Lions (1-1-2) boys soccer team beat the Cape Cod Academy Seahawks (1-2) 12-3 to win their first game of the season on Tuesday. Sophomore Nico Sullivan led the way with four goals and one assist. Junior Sebastian Ramos also was impressive with three goals and two assists. Jose Aguilar added two more goals, while senior Jay Imad had his first high school goal.

Boys Soccer

Dennis-Yarmouth 3, Sturgis East 0: The Dolphins (2-2) shutout the Storm (1-2-2) led by a group of underclassmen. Freshman Mackarios Powell made a run inside the box and scored with his lefty for the first goal of the game with an assist from junior Samuel Pereira.

Sophomore Dwayne Jowery started with a free kick and then rebounded it in for the second goal. Senior Frank Hernandez made a run and crossed it to freshman Jonas Rocha who was at the penalty spot and slotted it in near the post. Freshman John Richard had his first clean sheet of the season.

Henry Ellis played well on defense for the Storm (1-2-2).

Cape Tech 4, Old Colony 1: Jace Clady scored a hat trick to lead the Crusaders (1-1-1) to their first win of the season. Jonathan Da Silva, and Kyle DeFreitas each had one assist to Clady, while freshman Rahvarion Smith scored the last goal of the game with an assist from Guilherme DeOliveira.

Upper Cape 6, South Shore Tech 1: The Rams remain unbeaten (4-0) with their fourth straight win. Junior Gio Haga scored, assisted by senior Jadon Barton, while senior captain Gideon Drury scored as well, assisted by senior captain Lucas Sherman for the two first half goals.

In the second half, Gio scored another goal assisted by sophomore Jacoby Staruski. Barton scored his first goal off a shot from the top of the 18 assisted by Drury, then scored another goal assisted by sophomore Ayden Dias Hatch. Junior Sean Murphy ended the scoring with an assist by sophomore Emmanuel DeOliveria. Defense played well, and Jacoby Staruski played well shutting down his side of the field.

Falmouth Academy 2, Sturgis West 1: The Mariners (1-2) won their first game of the season as they beat the Navigators (1-2). Marcus Greco scored on a penalty kick around the 25th minute, while Fletcher Parsons scored from 25 yards in the 30th minute. Gus McGuire and Christian Hanoian played well on defense, and Benjamin Angel had a good game in midfield.

Nauset 5, Nantucket 0: The Warriors won their fourth straight to remain undefeated at 4-0. Sophomore Omari Perry had two goals and one assist to lead the Warriors. Junior Aiden Brown, senior Salvi Cacciola, and senior Santi Marin each scored a goal, while senior Charlie Cushing contributed one assist.

Barnstable 1, New Bedford 1: The Red Hawks (2-1-1) ended in a draw.

Plymouth North 5, Falmouth 1: After two straight ties their last two games, the Clippers (1-3-2) fell short at home.

Cohasset 6, Martha’s Vineyard 0: The Vineyarders (3-1-1) suffered their first loss of the season.

Monomoy 6, Rising Tide 3: The Sharks (4-2) have won four of their last five games.

Rockland 4, Sandwich 0: The Blue Knights (3-2) suffered their second loss of the season.

Mashpee 7, Carver 1: The Falcons (2-1) won their second game of the season.

Girls Soccer

Upper Cape 4, South Shore Tech 1: Alaina Hines, Meghan Holt, Jessi Girourd and Adryanna Turner each recorded a goal in the Rams (2-2) win.

Monomoy 4, Rising Tide 1: Karah Deveau had two goals, while Kiki Pigo Cronin had a goal and an assist for the Sharks (4-1). Ciarra Terry scored a goal, and Rylie Gillis dished out two assists.

St. John Paul II 7, Cape Cod Academy 1: Senior captain Ella Cheney led the Lions (1-2) to their first win of the season with three goals and two assists. Addison Cheney added two goals and one assist, while Raegan Dillon had a brace (two goals). Lily McNamara played effectively in midfield controlling play, and added two assists. Michaela Enright contributed one assist, while junior captain Meah Dalrymple played well on defense. Lili Shanahan played well in goal for Cape Cod Academy (1-3).

Sandwich 2, Rockland 1: The Blue Knights (3-1) bounced back after their first loss of the season last week with a win. Junior Aubrie Schwager scored first off an assist from senior Lily Hoffman.

After Rockland tied it up, the go-ahead goal with 15 minutes to play came from freshman Izzy Bar with a helper from sophomore Megan Jakubicka. Junior goal keeper Abi Kinney stuffed a Rockland breakaway with five minutes to play to secure the win for the Blue Knights. Center backs senior Julia Sutton and junior Ayla Whitney also played well.

Sturgis West 6, Falmouth Academy 1: The Navigators (3-0) won their third straight to remain unbeaten. Sophomore Faye McGuire scored the lone goal for the Mariners (1-2), while midfield senior captain Thalia O’Neil played well on both sides of the ball.

Sturgis East 3, Dennis-Yarmouth 0: In a game with two teams looking for their first wins, the Storm (1-1) beat the Dolphins (1-3). Eighth grader Molly Young played well at midfield both on the offensive and defensive end with her persistent effort and skill for D-Y.

Mashpee 2, Carver 1: After trailing 1-0, the Falcons (1-3) came back to win their first game of the season. In the 60th minute, Addi Cannistraro scored on a pass from Izzy Almeida. The winner came from Hailey Garcia, who received a ball from Emma Kelley in the 76th minute. Charlie Jenkins, Moya Williams, and Sierra Yohannan also played well, while Norah Paolini made six saves in net.

Old Colony 6, Cape Tech 0: The Crusaders (0-2) were shut out on the road.

Field Hockey

Dennis-Yarmouth 3, Nauset 0: Senior captain Ashley Holloman scored two goals to lead the Dolphins (3-1-2) to a win over the Warriors (2-2-1). The Holloman goal was on a well executed corner assist by Lily Anderson. Leah Woodward scored the third goal (unassisted), while Kayla Kelley had the shutout in goal.

Girls Volleyball

Sandwich 3, East Bridgewater 2: After trailing 2-1, the Blue Knights (3-3) came back and won a tight matchup in five sets (26-24, 17-25, 18-25, 25-8, 16-14). Kaity Landry had her best game as she did not miss a single serve, and had six aces and six kills. Alanna Schreibeis finished with 12 kills, and did good with blocking, while Ella McCabe had 10 kills. Jaymar Diaz and Mia Consalvi played well on the back row, Maddie contributed four aces, and Mia Mulcahy totaled 28 assists.

Mashpee 3, Abington 1: After an 0-3 start to the season, the Falcons (2-3) have won two straight matches.

Boys Golf

Nauset 237, Martha’s Vineyard 262: Jake Everson and Max St. Aubin each shot a 36, while Jack Martin followed up with a 38 for the Warriors (4-1) at Captains Golf Course Par 36. Finn Mayhew (41), Sean Kipperman (43), and Zach Weiner (43) rounded out the top six.

Mason Cron (39), and Piper Blau (40) led the way for the Vineyarders (0-2). Luke SIlva (42), Jack DeBettencourt (43), Nick Rabeni (49), and Jacoby Light (49) placed in the top six.

Diman 7, Cape Tech 2: Nolan Baker shot the low round of the day with a 43 for the Crusaders (0-5). Baker was a key factor helping his teammate Brayden Wright secure the best ball team match point to put both points on the board for Cape Tech.

St. John Paul II 240, Nantucket 250: The Lions remain unbeaten on the season at 5-0 at Miacomet Golf Course. Jack Carstensen shot a 1-over par 37, while sophomore Chris Heywood shot a career best 38. Matt Curley shot a 40 for JPII. Cole Chambers led the Whalers (3-2) with a 38.

Barnstable 240, Dennis-Yarmouth 309: Chad Tordone (37) and Colin Gleason (39) led the way for the Red Hawks (4-2) at Dennis Pines par 36. Cam Levesque (40), Ryan Woeller (40), Brody Nighan (41), and JJ Swindler (43) placed in the top six for Barnstable.

Trey McPherson's 41 led the way for the Dolphins (1-3). James Mullen (50), Robbie McPhee (52), Sam Beebe (54), Ryan Clarke (55), and Connor Bosiak (57) rounded out the top six.

Cape Cod Academy 272, Sturgis West 274: The Seahawks (2-3) handed the Navigators (2-1) their first loss of the season.

Norwell 141.5, Mashpee 44.5: The Falcons (0-4) lost on the road at Scituate Country Club.

Bourne 279, Case 321: The Canlamen (4-1) have won four straight after losing their opener.

Falmouth 262, Monomoy 270: The Clippers (2-2) handed the Sharks (2-1) their first loss of the season.

Girls Cross Country

Barnstable 15, Martha's Vineyard 50: The Red Hawks (1-0) took five of the top six places. Ava Bullock won the race in 19:52, followed by Lilly DeDecko (20:14). Chloe Dibb (21:06) placed fourth, Kera Clifford (21:23) came in fifth, and Eleanor Bullock (22:33) finished sixth.

Alexa Schroeder placed third in 20:26 to lead the Vineyarders (0-1).

Sturgis 20, Falmouth academy 45: Last year's MVP Elise Casso placed first, beating Sturgis’ Claire Heller by just over a minute. Elizabeth Blauer was the next placed runner for the Mariners in eighth place.

Dennis-Yarmouth 15, Falmouth 50: Isabella Cabral had a strong race and posted a personal best time of 26:11 on the Falmouth High School course.

Cape Cod Academy 22, Nantucket 37: The Seahawks beat the Whalers in cross country action.

Boys Cross Country

Barnstable 16, Martha's Vineyard 47: The Red Hawks (1-0) were at home for their first dual meet of the season and took the win with an almost perfect score.

Senior captain Jaxson Merrill led the way for Barnstable coasting to victory in 17:26. Kevin Defeudis (17:58) was runner-up, while Gabe Pichardo (18:44) placed third and Ryan Wolfe (19:13) finished fourth. Cam DeGrace (21:22) came in sixth, and Adrian Pichardo (21:54) had a seventh place finish. Jay Cornwall (22:35) finished eighth, and Logan Lewis (24:42) placed ninth to round out the top ten finishes for Barnstable.

Broden Vincent (19:23) led the way for the Vineyarders (0-1) in fifth place, while Jonah Mafcher (24:50) placed 10th.

Falmouth 23, Dennis-Yarmouth 36: Silas Gartner (17:25), and Adrean Blackwood (17:40) led all runners to claim first and second place respectively for the Clippers. Conor Furey (19:06), Tyler Moreis (19:15), and Lukas Bushy (19:32) also scored for Falmouth.

Sturgis 20, Falmouth Academy 38: Shane Stanghellini (first place) and teammate Dylan Moreno (second place) took the top two places for Sturgis.

Erik Gulmann (third place) was 23 seconds behind Moreno for the Mariners. Their top runner from last year, Nathan Gartner, has not raced so far this year due to an injury he sustained this past summer.

Nantucket 24, Cape Cod Academy 33: The Whalers boys team beat the Seahawks.
