THURSDAY

VOLLEYBALL

Calvary Christian 3, Cardinal Mooney 1

SARASOTA − The Cardinal Mooney Catholic High volleyball team went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the state in its first home match of the season.

Calvary Christian out of Clearwater, ranked fourth in the state by MaxPreps, gained momentum in a pivotal third set and went on to a 3-1 victory over the Cougars 19-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-20 Thursday night at Patterson Pavilion.

Junior libero Katie Powers picked up 26 digs. Junior middle hitter Riley Greene had 18 kills for Cardinal Mooney. Freshman right side hitter Lauren Leach added nine kills. Laura Larrick dished off 23 assists.

Cardinal Mooney (7-3) has three road matches next week: Monday at Bradenton Christian, Tuesday at Sarasota High and Thursday at Venice High.

Cardinal Mooney takeaways

1. The Cougars broke a 1-all tie and never looked back in taking the first set. Calvary Christian (11-1) pulled away at the end of the second set to get even. In the third, Cardinal Mooney led 23-19 and 24-22 before the Warriors scored the final four points of the set to gain momentum. “Gave it away,” Cougars coach Chad Davis said. “That was the swinger. It was a changer of the match right there to be down 2-1, instead of up 2-1. We had the chances; we just didn’t make the plays to do it.”

2. It was not the first time Cardinal Mooney could not close out a set. It happened twice at the Nike Tournament of Champions, resulting in its prior two losses. That is why Davis spent time in practice this week on that situation. “It’s an issue we were trying to work through,” Davis said. “We practiced that exact scenario this week in practice, so I thought we were ready to break through. We just weren’t able to get it done. Credit to them obviously they are one of the absolute top teams in Florida.”

Last year, the Cougars went to Clearwater and ended Calvary Christian’s season, 3-1, in the Class 3A-Region 3 semifinal. “I’m sure they remember us ending their season last year,” Davis said. “We knew it was going to be tough. But it’s frustrating”

3. Even in the fourth set, the Cougars went down fighting. Down 24-16 Cardinal Mooney fought off four match points. “I’m still proud of our kids,” Davis said. “They played really hard. And they were right there when no one thinks we are going to be that kind of a team. It’s just frustrating. We had our chances; we just couldn’t finish it. You have to be able to close out games against elite teams when you have a chance to do it.”

TUESDAY

VOLLEYBALL

Venice 3, Braden River 0

25-11, 25-13, 25-17

BRADENTON -- Coming off an impressive showing at the Nike Tournament of Champions, the Venice High volleyball team Tuesday evening went on the road and swept Braden River High, 3-0, at the Pirates gym 25-11, 25-13, 25-17.

Venice (7-2) returns to action 7 p.m. Wednesday night at home against Barron Collier of Naples. The Cougars were one of the teams in the preseason classic at Venice.

After suffering their first loss of the season, the Pirates (2-1) head to Parrish Community for a 7 p.m. match Thursday.

Venice takeaways

1. Venice opened the Nike Tournament of Champions with wins over Lake Brantley, Altamonte Springs and Bishop Kenny. After losing to Viera and Hagerty, Venice closed with a victory over Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas to take seventh out of 32 teams. “It was high, high level,” Venice coach Brian Wheatley said. “It was fast. If you let down at all, the other team is going to take it over. We learned a lot ourselves and definitely grew a little bit.”

Last year, Venice went 3-3 in the event and finished eighth before going on to win the sixth state championship in program history.

2. Against Braden River, Wheatley cleared his bench. “We got a lot of play time for a lot of kids,” he said.

3. Junior Summer Kohler led the way against the Pirates with 15 kills, eight coming in the third set. Senior outside hitter Taylor Orris ended with nine kills. Senior middle hitter Jalynn Gardner and senior middle hitter Hilary Hupp each finished with four kills. Kohler also topped the team with three aces. Jayda Lanham, Brighton Ferguson and Ava Wallingsford each served two aces.

Braden River takeaways

1. The Pirates had difficulty generating offense. In the match, 28 of their 41 points came off Venice mistakes. “Yes, we were very chaotic tonight, for sure,” Braden River coach Matthew McElhiney said. “At times, it has happened.”

2. It did not matter to McElhiney that Venice was on the opposite side of the net. “Venice is who they are: They are very disciplined. They are in the right spots. They hit to the right spots. We were the opposite of that tonight. We were out of position. We were hitting to the center and not to angles as much as we should have been. We were the opposite of what they were doing, and the scoreboard showed that.”

3. Braden River received four kills from senior outside hitter Brynna Sands and three from junior Baylee Hinkle. “We knew they were going to be constant,” McElhiney said of Venice. “We didn’t rise to the level we could have tonight, even being down. Passing was the issue and getting good swings to good zones.”
