VOLLEYBALL

Bradenton Christian 3, Braden River 0

25-20, 25-20, 26-24

BRADENTON − In the first meeting, the Bradenton Christian School volleyball team took Braden River High to five sets.

In the second meeting, the Panthers took the Pirates out.

Bradenton Christian scored a sweep of Braden River, 3-0, Thursday night 25-20, 25-20, 26-24 at the Pentecost Athletic Center.

In the first matchup, Braden River won 21-25, 25-13, 25-20, 24-26, 15-12.

The Panthers (15-8) extended their winning streak to three matches, while ending the Pirates’ seven-match winning streak.

Braden River takeaways

1. The Pirates (18-4) were dealt a tough blow earlier in the week when senior setter Mary Allison McGuire suffered a season-ending foot injury during practice. Younger sister sophomore Mia McGuire took over the setting duties. Mia McGuire was the setter when Mary Allison McGuire was out earlier in the season with an injury. “She did a good job tonight,” Braden River coach McElhiney said of Mia McGuire. “She got some rust off. She made some understandable mistakes, but overall she set well. I wasn’t disappointed.”

2. Along with her setting, the Pirates lost Mary Allison McGuire blocking ability. Senior Brynna Sands led Braden River with 11 kills, two aces and a block. Aryanna Spainhower had seven kills, a block and an ace. Senior Ericka Freeman finished with four kills and a block. Rylee Hinkle had five kills and a block before being injured. Baylee Hinkle took over and had three kills. “They played really well tonight,” McElhiney said of Bradenton Christian. “Their outsides played good. BCS played great tonight. They did a really good job.”

3. Ranked 40th in the state, fifth in Class 5A and first in 5A-District 3 by the FHSAA power rankings, the Pirates led the third set 24-21 before Bradenton Christian scored the final five points of the night. One came on a disputed tip call on a kill. “There were some unfortunate calls didn’t go our way, but that’s part of the game,” McElhiney said whose squad finishes the regular season with matches Tuesday at 13-3 Venice and Thursday at 21-2 Carrollwood Day. “They’re there so we can prepare for the speed of the game. I just want us to come out and compete and play hard. We did a lot of good things tonight. We just dropped a few points here and there, plays that we just kinda checked out mentally on, in the first two sets. And in the third set, sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn’t.”

Bradenton Christian takeaways

1. As far as the defensive effort, this was one of the Panthers’ finest performances of the season. Bradenton Christian not only picked up just about everything, the passes to setters junior Lexi Joyal and freshman Addelyn VanDuinen were spot on. “They played really well,” Panthers coach Zach VenDuinen said. “Our serve receive at times let us down, like at the start of the third set. Outside of that, they played really well. Our setters did a really good job tonight.”

2. Junior outside hitter Jillian Zoerman had a match-high 16 kills. Junior Faith Allen finished with 12 kills and an ace. Sophomore Ava Baugh contributed eight kills. Junior Nariah Zonczak finished with five kills and a block. Joyal served three aces and had the set-winning kill in the first set. “We picked up something on film that they don’t block the right-side hitters as strong as they take away the middles and the outsides,” Coach VanDuinen said. “We wanted to see if we could go after that, and we got some points off it. I was happy about that.”

3. Ranked 79th in the state and 20th in Class 3A by the FHSAA power rankings, the Panthers have played the third-hardest schedule in the area behind Venice High and Cardinal Mooney Catholic. Bradenton Christian has two regular season matches remaining: Tuesday at home against Lakewood Ranch High and Thursday at Lemon Bay High. “Lakewood Ranch took it to us at the beginning of the year. We beat them in three, but that was probably one of their best games,” Coach VanDuinen said. “For me, I want to see consistency for the rest of the season. I want to see what we saw tonight on Tuesday night. Just that consistency is what we’re looking for going into the postseason. We’re excited about where we are. We made some changes where we are able to serve a little more aggressively and get teams out of system.”

TUESDAY

VOLLEYBALL

Parrish Community 3, Sarasota 1

25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 25-20

SARASOTA − The Parrish Community High volleyball team learned its lesson.

After losing a match to Sarasota in which they won the first two sets, the Bulls have taken care of the Sailors in the next two matches.

Parrish Community’s most recent victory over Sarasota was a 3-1 decision 25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 25-20 Tuesday night on the Sailors’ Senior Night at Eddie Howell Gymnasium.

Ending a two-match losing streak, the Bulls (9-8) return to action 7 p.m. Thursday at home against Palmetto High.

In having their two-match winning streak snapped, the Sailors (9-11) visit rival Riverview High on Thursday.

Parrish Community takeaways

1. The Bulls lost a match they led 2-0 by winning the first two sets 35-33 and 26-24 before dropping the final three 26-28, 22-25, 6-15 on Sept. 21 at home. Since then, Parrish Community has defeated Sarasota, 2-1, in a tournament match and 3-1 Tuesday. The lesson learned is “We’ve got to continue to pick that ball up,” Bulls coach Danielle Stevenson said. “The play is never done. They hustle, but we’ve got to hustle harder. We stepped up this time.”

2. Parrish Community had to dig deeper due to players out with injuries and illness. The Bulls received big performances from junior outside hitter Julia Smith (13 kills, 18 digs), freshman just called up from junior varsity Alysa Jones (13 kills, 13 digs) and junior setter Peyton Hayworth (5 kills, 2 digs). Senior Isabel Alvarez contributed 11 kills. Alvarez was one of three Bulls seniors honored along with Lily Hiatt and Jenna Bryan.

3. With three matches remaining in the regular season, Stevenson is looking for “consistency. Just more consistency. Continue to keep that energy up. We’ve been working on positivity, teamwork. And no injuries.”

Sarasota takeaways

1. Middle hitter Jillian Davidson, one of the seven seniors honored before the match, finished with 12 kills and three blocks. Another senior Kate Kempton finished with nine kills. Senior Aubrie Roe had seven kills before being injured. Senior Kylie Giasson ended with four kills and two blocks. Sophomore Julia Norman and junior Joanie Garron contributed five and four kills, respectively. Junior Carley Ramsden and sophomore Rylan Miller each served two aces. But the Sailors could not complete the comeback like in the first match with Parrish Community. “We tried,” Sarasota coach Daris Rodriguez said. “They (the Bulls) keep the ball in the air. When we have rallies, the team that makes less mistakes is the one that is going to win.”

2. With five matches remaining in the regular season, Rodriguez wants her club to work on “blocking. My main focus in the beginning of the season was fixing the serve receive. But there is no point in having good serve receive if you don’t kill. That’s where we are right now. It’s difficult when you play three or four times a week because it’s less time to practice.”

3. In an extended pre-match ceremony, the Sailors honored seniors Davidson, Giasson, Roe, Ana Rodriguez-Diaz, Elena Lugo, Jocelyn Parker and Madison Macdonald.
