HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Mashpee field hockey turns over a new leaf to start season

After winning one game a season ago, the Mashpee Middle-High School field hockey team beat Wareham 5-0 in the season opener on Tuesday to start the 2023 season.

"Mashpee has not won many games in the last few years. This win was a huge confidence boost," Mashpee head coach Eilis Auger said.

Jyrzie Alves scored twice for the Falcons (1-0) in the shutout win over the Vikings. Dierdre Tokla, Ava Theodorides and Deliyah Fortes each added a goal, and Keelie Fraser and Addyson Rebello played well for Mashpee.

Field Hockey

Dennis-Yarmouth 3, St. John Paul II 0: The Dolphins (1-0) opened up the season with a shutout road win over the Lions (0-1).

Junior Megan McDowell started the scoring in the first quarter with an assist by Lily Anderson. Senior Ashley Holloman scored in the second quarter with helpers from Megan McDowell and Anderson. The final goal was netted by freshman Brooke Chicoine on a breakaway from the 25-yard line. Kayla Kelly recorded the shutout with two saves.

Jenna Richard, freshman defensive back, had a goal line save late in the game to ensure the shutout, and Charleigh Hicks had played well in the midfield for D-Y.

Girls Volleyball

Plymouth North 3, Sandwich 2: The Blue Knights (0-1) came up short in their first game of the season.

Pembroke 3, Falmouth 0: The Clippers (0-1) fell in straight sets (20-25, 18-25, 17-25) in their season opener. Junior Christina Femino had two aces and 13 assists, while senior Delia Roulston had four aces and 13 digs. Sophomore Brooke Farringtons finished with an ace, five kills and two blocks.

Barnstable 3, Danvers 0: The Red Hawks (1-0) opened their season with a sweep (25-7, 25-10, 25-9) win at home on Labor Day. Senior Molly Fredo led the way with 13 kills, while senior Charlotte Sullivan and junior Molly Gleason each added seven kills. Senior setter Sadie Wellbeloved found her teammates the whole game with 27 assists. Senior Logan Hurwitz had nine digs, and senior Scout Johnson contributed a 10-point service run in the first set.

Boys Soccer

Martha’s Vineyard 1, St. John Paul II 1: The Lions (0-0-1) and Vineyarders (0-0-1) started off their seasons with a draw. Junior Jose Aguilar netted the lone goal, with a cross assist from senior captain Carlos Siguencia for JPII. The Lions also had defensive contributions from Cody Boghdan, Jay Imad, Henry Roy, and Quincy Heitsch.

Falmouth 4, Monomoy 1: Webert Muniz notched a hat trick to lead the way for the Clippers in their first game of the season. Ryan Simone netted the other goal for Falmouth (1-0-0). Ryan Laramee scored the lone goal for the Sharks (0-1-0).

Nauset 3, Dennis-Yarmouth 2: The Warriors (1-0-0) started their season with a close win over the Dolphins (0-1-0) as Charlie Cushing scored two goals for Nauset.

Brockton 3, Barnstable 2: Senior Philipe Ribeiro scored both goals for the Red Hawks (0-1-0) in the loss.

Girls Soccer

Martha’s Vineyard 2, St. John Paul II 0: After being knotted at zero at halftime, Talia Macaferri and Jane Coogan each scored in the second half for the Vineyarders (1-0-0) season opener win over the Lions (0-1-0). Senior captain Georgia Magden chalked up her first shutout of the season, while her fellow junior goalkeeper kept the clean sheet in the second half for the Vineyarders.

Monomoy 2, Falmouth 1: Kiki Pigo Cronin scored in the 11th minute and found the back of the net again in the 77th minute for both of the Sharks (1-0-0) goals. She had help with assists from Lucy Bates and Karah Deveau. Ciarra Terry, Karlie Monteiro and Fiona Moore played strong on defense and in the midfield.

Scarlett Oberton scored the lone goal for the Clippers (0-1-0). Phoebe Corner and Moe Lind were strong on defense and in the midfield, and Riley Devlin made a number of nice saves in goal.

Nantucket 7, Barnstable 0: Chelsea Gross and Adney Brannigan each found the back of the net twice to lead the Whalers (1-0-0) to their season opener win over the Red Hawks (0-1-0). Emery Bouchard, Claire Misurelli, and Emma Woodbury each contributed a goal for Nantucket. Defensive back Taylor Bistany and attacking midfielder Claire Misurelli also played well for the Whalers.

Nauset 6, Pembroke 2: Olivia Avellar and Caroline Bothfeld scored all the goals with twin hat tricks for the Warriors on the road in their season opener. Caroline Kennard finished with two assists, while Alexis Montalto added an assist for Nauset (1-0-0). Samantha McIsaac, Georgiana Orlandella, and Kennard played well in the midfield.

Falmouth Academy 2, Atlantis Charter 0: Faye McGuire scored a goal in each half for the Mariners in their season opener victory. Willow Lajoie assisted McGuire on the second goal, and Thalia O'Neil, Susanna Lowell and Anne Jeffrey each had contributions for Falmouth Academy (1-0-0).

Bridgewater-Raynham 8, Dennis-Yarmouth 0: The Dolphins (0-1-0) were shut out in their season opener. Brianna Hanniford did well communicating on defense, while Elizabeth Ritchie made some great saves in net for D-Y. Tessa Hinds played well on both ends of the field. Mia Medeirso, an 8th grader who started in her first high school game, showcased her speed and positive attitude.

Boys Golf

Nauset 254, Cape Cod Academy 278: Jack Martin was the medalist as he shot a 38 at Captains Golf Course for the Warriors (1-0). Max St. Aubin (39), Chris Ross (43), Sean Kipperman (43), Finn Meghen (45) and Paul Alves (46) placed in the top six for Nauset.

Ben Catalano led the way for the Seahawks with a 41. Tripp Germani (42), Oliver Smith (43), Liam Whalen (47), Olivia Jatczak (48), and Andreas Stefos (56) placed in the top six for Cape Cod Academy (0-1).

Abington 143, Mashpee 103: The Falcons (0-1) fell short in their season opener. Liam Hansford led the way with 20 points, while Gavin Lakatos wasn't far behind with 19. Jackson Carlson had 18 points, James Benners finished with 16 and Tyler Cardeiro, Jason Merkman, and Ryan Hough each had 15 points for Mashpee.

Sandwich 132, Rockland 88: Zaren Graff led the team as he shot a 39 for the Blue Knights (1-0). Dylan McCabe (40), Luke Greeley (41), Cole Rogers (42), Blaise Chatigny (42), and Nathan DeBlank (42) rounded out the top six for Sandwich.

Girls Cross Country

Dennis-Yarmouth 19, Nantucket 42: Siena Lauze placed first with a time of 22:45, followed up closely by teammate Olivia Pendleton in second with a time of 22:46 for D-Y (1-0). Hannah Harrington placed third for Nantucket (0-1).

Boys Cross Country

Dennis-Yarmouth 20, Nantucket 40: The Dolphins (1-0) opened the season with a win as Nick Terranova won with a time of 19:35, while running mate Pierce Johnson placed third in 20:28. Rory Murray finished second in 19:53 for Nantucket (0-1).
