BOYS GOLF

Weymouth's Choukas stars: Senior Anthony Choukas won the Bay State Conference individual crown, shooting 78 at Wellesley Country Club to edge four players who all shot 79. It's the first time in recent memory that a Weymouth player has won the title.

"It was a great accomplishment," said Wildcats coach Bob Dillon, Choukas' dad. "The AD (Rob O'Leary) and I were trying to figure out (when the last time someone from Weymouth won). He's been there for a couple of years and I've only been there for two years. We've spoken to a bunch of different people and nobody can remember the last time someone (from Weymouth) won the individual championship. It's definitely been quite some time."

Dillon called Choukas' round a "hard-fought" one. "There are a lot of talented kids in the Bay State Conference, but he was able to grind it out," Dillon said. "He was able to birdie 17 and then hit an 8-footer on 18 to save the 78 that ended up getting him the win. He was consistent all day long."

Milton's Johnny Gillooly tied for sixth with an 80. Milton's Ben Catudal shot 82 to finish ninth, and Braintree's Nick Fasano was in a tie for 10th at 83. Wellesley (243) won the team title, followed by Needham (247) and Milton (250). Braintree (262) was sixth, and Weymouth (269) tied for eighth.

"We struggled as a team this year, but the golf program is growing," Dillon said of Weymouth. "We're hoping that this gives us some momentum going forward. We have 35 kids in the program; we didn't cut anyone. We had two JV teams. Seeing something like this, a homegrown boy being able to beat a lot of the bigger schools, it was definitely an accomplishment. I hope it propels the program forward."

East Bridgewater 114, Middleboro 93: Matt Werra was low medalist at 4 over par (good for 23 points) while Cole Redder (21 points), Luke Parry (18) and Sean Gurney (18) also played well as EB (13-0) clinched the South Shore League Sullivan Division title for the first time in school history.
