High school hoops roundup: Saugatuck girls clinch division share; Chix edge Holland

The Saugatuck girls clinched at least a share of the SAC Central Division with a 58-19 win over Delton Kellogg on Friday night.

Saugatuck's Brook Simpson, a Miss Basketball candidate, scored 21 points behind five 3-pointers.

Junior Kennedy Gustafson scored 15 points and freshman Mylah Simpson added 11.

"I am pleased with our overall effort, but our kids know enough not to be satisfied," Saugatuck coach Kevin Tringali said. "We still have so much to clean up as we move forward."

BOYS BASKETBALL

Zeeland East 52, Holland 48

The Chix held off the Dutch in a stellar OK Green showdown.

Layne Risdon scored 20 points and had 10 points, four assists and four blocks.

Will VerSteeg sank two free throws late to seal the victory for the Chix.

Junior BJ Walker scored 12 points and had four steals. Jacob Vera scored seven points.

Jacob VanHekken led the Dutch with 21.

"A slow first half for us really hurt us," Holland coach Mason Theile said. "Proud of the run we made in the second half to get back in the game, but credit to Zeeland East for executing their game plan and getting the win tonight."

Saugatuck 51, Delton Kellogg 37

The Trailblazers extended their win streak to five with a tough road win.

Saugatuck took control with a 25-7 advantage in the third quarter.

Leading the way for the Trailblazers was junior Carter Miller with 23 points, scoring both inside and outside. Senior Russell VandePoel added 16 points.

Muskegon 53, Zeeland West 44

The Dux lost the OK Green battle.

Luke Bakker scored 14 points to lead Zeeland West.

Gobles 54, Black River 40

The Black River boys lost to Gobles high school Friday night 40-54Record 7-14

Josiah Thomas lead the River Rats (7-14) with 19 points and Julian Fowler chipped in 9 points and five rebounds.

"Great game against a well-coached team tonight," Black River coach Darrion Denham said. "We managed to still keep things close after being in foul trouble in the first half. We seem to play hard and play together in the third quarter, not sure why but every third quarter we out score our opponent. As a coach I need to find a way to get us going early."

Hudsonville 76, West Ottawa 54

The Eagles led 23-11 after the first quarter and never let up.

Jovaan Daniels had 20 points for Hudsonville.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

West Ottawa 57, Hudsonville 53

The Panthers improved to 14-4 and 9-3 in the OK Red with the win, sparked by a late steal from Chelsea Overbeek, that turned into a go-ahead basket from Magaly Lemus.

Overbeek and Gabby Reynolds hit free throws to seal the win.

Reynolds scored 32 points, her sixth consecutive 30-point game. Overbeek had 15 points.

Zeeland East 54, Holland 26

Zeeland East defeated Holland 54-26. Emily Wierenga led the Chix with 14 points. Libby Post chipped in 12 points and CC Kuras added 11.

Holland was led in scoring by Hadleigh Hilgert with 11. Alba Rodriguez Lima added six apiece.

Muskegon 47, Zeeland West 41

The Dux went on the road to Muskegon and battled back from a double digit deficit in the second half to take a 39-36 lead with about 5 minutes left in the fourth on a huge 3 by Tessa Rindfliesch but ultimately couldn’t hold on in the final minutes.

Jordyn Klaasen had 19 points and Georgia Kuyers had nine.

South Haven 63, Fennville 37

The Blackhawks dropped the SAC matchup.

Lila Rosema had 14 points and Ceeley Howard added eight for Fennville.
