High School Football: Second-half surge lifts Dundee; Flat Rock 4-0

ONSTED – Dundee was locked in a 14-14 halftime tie, but exploded for 27 unanswered points in the second half to pull away for a 41-14 win over Onsted.

The Vikings jumped out to a 14-0 lead with 2:41 left in the first half on a touchdown run by Cooper Buhl and a 36-yard pass from Ethan Layton to Braiden Whitaker.

Onsted hit on two long pass plays to tie the game at the half.

Trey Parker snapped the tie with an 8-yard run in the third quarter, then Dundee took advantage of a bad snap on a punt to score on a 3-yard run by Joey Brink.

Layton (4 yards) and Trey Parker (3 yards) added short scoring runs in the fourth quarter.

Dundee squared its record at 2-2 heading into next week’s home game against Adrian Madison.

Flat Rock 56, Jefferson 0

FLAT ROCK – Graham Junge tossed six touchdown passes, including four straight to Rocco Breslin, as Flat Rock improved to 4-0.

Adam Szalay (46 yards) and Alex Gillum (10 yards) caught early TD passes to give the Rams a 14-0 lead. Graham then tossed touchdowns of 31, 24, and 13 yards to Breslin to put Flat Rock ahead 35-0 at halftime.

Graham and Breslin connected for a 13-yard touchdown to open the second half.

Junge finished 11-for-18 passing for 214 yards. Breslin had 4 receptions for 81 yards and Szalay added 3 catches for 71 yards.

Brian Booms (60 yards) and Ben Scully (12 yards) had rushing scores. Booms collected 117 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Defensively, Jaycob Pieprzyk led Flat Rock with 4 tackles and an interception. Logan Coplen and Tim Claiborne recovered fumbles.

Jefferson fell to 0-4.

Milan 34, Grosse Ile 0

GROSSE ILE – William Gaskell V and Lukas Linzell each scored twice on the ground to help Milan get back on track after last week's overtime loss to New Boston Huron.

"The first three weeks were tough," Milan coach Jesse Hoskins said. "We are practicing better. We are a more mature team. I'm proud of our guys. They had to be tough to bounce back after last week."

Gaskell twice scored from 2 yards out, finishing with 207 yards rushing on 24 carries. He also was 5-for-7 passing for 77 yards.

Milan led 14-0 at halftime.

Linzell gave the Big Reds a boost after the break with scoring runs of 4 and 7 yards. Braeden Gotts added a 4-yard rushing score.

Linzell finished with 13 carries for 110 yards, Gotts had 42 yards rushing on 2 carries, and Jaxen Wourman added 4 catches for 69 yards.

Gaskell and Kam Ackley intercepted passes.

"We played out most complete game of the year," Milan coach Jesse Hoskins said. "Our defense really stepped up to the challenge of a dangerous offense. We were able to run the ball inside and outside. We also threw the ball with more efficiency."

Milan improved to 3-1 and host St. Mary Catholic Central (1-3) next week.

Summerfield 35, West Unity Hilltop 0

PETERSBURG – Summerfield lost three fumbles, but more than overcame that by forcing nine turnovers.

Eli VanHuysen intercepted two passes and Tyler Dafoe, Jude Flowers and Jake Wadsworth each picked off one. Brenden Myshock, Ethan Jeffers, Charles Baldridge and Hayden Noland recovered fumbles.

Wadsworth ran for 151 yards on 19 carries and 2 touchdowns (2 and 44 yards).

“We finally broke out and got him a long one of 44 yards,” Summerfield coach Dylan Szegedi said. “That was nice to see. He ran hard.”

Trace Secor threw TD passes to VanHuysen (12 yards) and Tyler Dafoe (18 yards). Dafoe returned his interception 45 yards for a score.

Summerfield is 4-0 heading into next week’s game at Erie Mason (1-3).

Whiteford 58, Edon 18

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford’s running game was in high gear Friday as the Bobcat racked up nearly 500 yards rushing.

The Bobcats got long rushing touchdowns from Jake Iott (80 yards), Hunter DeBarr (26 and 50), Stepan Masserant (24, 11), Brek Ruddy (48) and Antonio Nachtrab (54 yards).

“We were consistent tonight,” Whiteford coach Todd Thieken said. “We were consistent where we weren’t having five good plays, then do something bad. Our offensive lineman did a really good job with their assignments and our backs were hitting the holes in the right spots.”

Tre Eitniear threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Kolby Masserant and Brandon Knaggs scored on a 2-yard rush for the other Bobcat touchdowns.

Kolby Masserant and Ryin Ruddy had interceptions for the Bobcat defense.

Iott rushed for 116 yards and DeBarr 102. Brek Ruddy had 86 yards on the ground for the Bobcats, who are 4-0 and have won 18 straight games.

Ottawa Hills 54, Erie Mason 16

OTTAWA HILLS, Ohio – Erie Mason ran into an angry opponent.

Ottawa Hills, which suffered its first loss of the season last week against Whiteford, took out its frustrations on the Eagles, scoring 28 points in the opening quarter and led 48-0 at halftime.

Vaughn Brown threw fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Toby Frazier (32 yards) and Korbin Herrera (25 yards). Frazier caught 3 passes for 101 yards and Herrera 2 for 61.

The Eagles lost their third straight and fell to 1-3 heading into next week's home game against 4-0 Summerfield.

Hudson 22, Ida 10

IDA – Ida held a 10-6 lead at halftime, but attrition took its toll.

The Blue Streaks were down to their third-string center.

“We had opportunities, but we struggled to move the ball,” Ida coach Jeff Potter said. “I don’t want to knock those kids. They are working hard. We’re just shorthanded right now.”

Wyatt Dirkmaat ran for a touchdown and Max Buschmann kicked a field goal to give the Blue Streaks the halftime lead.

The defense was solid all night led by Tyler Konieczny playing in his first game of the season. Josh Rose and Dylan Jarrett also played well. Seth Breitner and Sam King stepped up to fill holes on the offensive line.

Ida (1-3) travels to Hillsdale next week.

Saline 48, Bedford 0

TEMPERANCE – Bedford was shut out for the second straight week in a tough battle against the undefeated Hornets.

The Mules were playing shorthanded and relied on its younger players in a number of key spots.

Sophomore Isaac Henman filled in at quarterback for the and completed 6 of 13 passes for 44 yards. Vincent McGranhan filled in on defense and led with 4 1/2 tackles.

"We knew it was going to be a tough one going in," Bedford coach John Phillips said. "I'm really proud of the youngsters that stepped up."

Bedford (1-3) lost 44-0 last week to Dexter and has been outscored 92-0 over its past two games.

"We preached all week that we couldn't worry about what Saline was going to do," Phillips said. "We just have to worry about if we're getting better and measure ourselves against what we did the week before.

"There's still a lot of season left to play."

Bedford travels to Ann Arbor Pioneer (1-3) next week.

Riverview 49, New Boston Huron 21

NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron was able to score some points against the defending Huron League champions, but could not slow the Riverview offense.

Huron jumped out to a 13-0 lead on an 8-yard touchdown run by Austin O'Dell and a 33 pass from Micah Smith to Blake McCarthy. But then Riverview got its offense rolling and Huron's only answer was a 19 yard TD pass in the third quarter from Smith to Jake Handyside.

Huron, which won its first game of the season last week, dipped to 1-3. It travels to Jefferson Friday..
