High School Football Notebook: Lakeview sees chance at first win of the season slip away

BATTLE CREEK - Lakeview had a chance to get its first win of the season, but let it slip away in the second half.

A second-half rally gave St. Joseph a 27-21 win over Lakeview in Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference football action at Lakeview High School on Friday.

Lakeview led 21-0 in the second quarter, but would not score again as the Bears scored 27 unanswered points.

The Spartans scored all three touchdowns on long runs by senior running back Zach Kucharczyk. Kucharczyk had a 33-yard scoring run in the first quarter and then scored twice in the second quarter, including a 75-yard scoring scamper to give Lakeview the 21-0 lead. Kucharczyk had 194 yards rushing on 15 carries with quarterback Jake Kucharczyk adding 80 yards on 22 carries.

St. Joseph cut the lead to 21-7 by halftime and then scored three times in the third quarter to earn the win as the Bears quarterback Davis Crossman had 81 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the ground, while adding a touchdown pass.

Jackson Northwest 31, Pennfield 20

Pennfield fell to 1-3 overall with an Interstate 8 Conference loss to Jackson Northwest (2-2). The Panthers' Isaiah Adams caught a touchdown pass and threw a touchdown pass to pace Pennfield. Kaideen Guthrie had 55 yards rushing to lead Pennfield and a score. Je'Shawn Clark had 91 yards receiving and a touchdown. Danny Wells had nine tackles to lead the Pennfield defense.

Stevensville-Lakeshore 41, Battle Creek Central 14

Battle Creek Central remained winless after falling to Stevensville-Lakeshore in Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference action at C.W. Post Field. BCC is now 0-4 with Stevensville-Lakeshore going to 3-1, including 2-0 in the league. BCC quarterback Devoine Newton threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Charles Sims and ran in for a second score from 14 yards out.

Bellevue 40, St. Philip 8

Bellevue broke open a close game at halftime to pull away for the win in this 8-player football matchup. The Broncos led 12-8 at intermission and then scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to improve to 3-1 on the season. Seth Keson led Bellevue with 88 yards rushing and two scores and also threw for 143 yards passing. Caleb Dahlem added two touchdowns and 89 yards rushing and Chase Graham had a monster game with 105 yards receiving while also coming up with 12 tackles, including three tackles for loss. St. Philip falls to 1-3 as quarterback Colt Myers had the lone touchdown for the Tigers. Magnus Scriber had 12 tackles for St. Philip with Brogan Lightfoot and Myers adding 10 stops.

Colon 65, Burr Oak 6

Colon jumped out to a 30-0 lead in the first quarter and improved to 2-2 with the 8-player football win. Magi quarterback Maverick Downs had 152 yards rushing and four touchdowns on the ground and added three scoring passes. Kyle Muntain had a rushing touchdown and added two scoring receptions.

Climax-Scotts 61, North Adams-Jerome 6

State-ranked Climax-Scotts jumped out to a 34-6 lead in the first quarter and went on to improve to 4-0 with the 8-player victory. Jackson Bagwell had 184 yards rushing to lead the Panthers with two touchdowns with Luke Lawrence adding three touchdowns on the ground. Miles Shannon caught two touchdown passes and added 88 yards receiving.
