High School Football: Monroe opens with win under new coach

MONROE – The Kyle Reed era is off to a great start at Monroe High School.

The Trojans opened the 2023 season under a new coach Thursday, beating Jackon 24-6.

“It’s nice to come out on top after all the work they put in,” Reed said.

Monroe did not complete a pass but ran the ball effectively with five different backs. Amir Oliver (4 yards), Dinato Gandara (64 yards) and Teagan Simmons (15) ran for touchdowns

Kicker Camden Schmidt also had a big night, going 3-for-3 on PATs and booting a 35-yard field goal.

It was Monroe’s first win on its new artificial turf that was installed last season. All three of the Trojans’ victories in 2022 were on the road.

The Trojans scored on their opening drive and never looked back.

“We’re running a new offense,” Reed said. “The kids came out and executed what the coaches taught them. It was good to see it pay off. That was huge.”

Gandara racked up 177 yards on just 7 carries.

“He’s come a long way,” Reed said. “I am very proud of him.”

Jack Jones led the defense with an interception and 2.5 sacks. Schmidt also had an interception, Adam Nabozny recovered a fumble and Breylon Richards was credited with 1.5 sacks.

Warren Collegiate 36, SMCC 7

MONROE – “We were not friendly to ourselves,” SMCC coach Adam Kipf said.

Chase Terrasi scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter and Drew Harris picked the PAT for the only points for the Falcons.

“We had our opportunities, but we shot ourselves in the foot,” Kipf said. “We made a lot of young mistakes.”

Livonia Churchill 36, New Boston Huron 12

NEW BOSTON – Livonia Churchill stunned New Boston Huron with 21 points in the second quarter and the Chiefs never recovered.

Huron recorded the first score of the game on a 1-yard run by Micah Smith, but trailed 21-6 at halftime.

Smith added another 6-yard scoring run in the third quarter and finished with 60 rushing yards on 14 attempts.

Freshman Noah Harris recovered a fumble and Drew Ladach, Brennan Caldwell, A.J. Floyd and Ryan Anderson played well on defense.
