High school baseball: Meanwhile, in Region 4

Apr. 13—TIFTON — Region 1 champion Tift County will open up the state playoffs against the No. 4 team from Region 4 beginning April 23. Who might that be? That race is still in the air, though it has narrowed considerably.

Marist has clinched the Region 4 championship. Even if the War Eagles drop all three next week, only one team, St. Pius X, could catch them. However, Marist has the tiebreaker, having won two from the Golden Lions.

Second through fourth places currently are St. Pius (11-4), Dunwoody (11-4) and North Atlanta (9-6). Riverwood, Lakeside and South Cobb have all been eliminated from advancing to state.

Next week sees St. Pius play Riverwood (5-10), which dropped three games to Dunwoody during the week. Dunwoody plays Marist, which has lost only once in region. North Atlanta takes on South Cobb, which is not only 0-15 against the rest of the conference, but has been outscored 217-15.

If St. Pius sweeps Riverwood and North Atlanta sweeps South Cobb, that would give those teams 14 and 12 wins, respectively. By luck of drawing Marist in the final regular season series, Dunwoody would likely fall to fourth in the standings.

St. Pius won their series against Dunwoody and North Atlanta. North Atlanta won two of three from Dunwoody.
