Sales tax has always been a factor in financial decisions, but the current market trends in 2023—the unknowns magnified by inflation—have added a new level of focus for consumers nationwide.

Overall, 45 states (plus D.C.) collect state sales taxes, while 38 of those collect a local tax as well.

Add them together, and the combinations present an interesting economic overview of which parts of the country have serious wallet-whopping percentages—and those that do not.

Here’s how the combined sales taxes play out in all 50.
