High Desert Sports Roundup: University Prep knocks off the defending CVL baseball champs

The University Prep baseball team rallied for five runs in the sixth inning to kick off Cross Valley League action on Wednesday afternoon with a victory over the defending champion.

The Jaguars beat Hesperia Christian 9-4 on the road and improved to 8-3 on the season.

University Prep took a 2-1 lead after scoring two runs in the fourth inning. Hesperia Christian (8-2) struck back for three runs in the bottom half of the inning after a pair of home runs from Nathaniel Rener and Caleb Audet.

It didn’t last long. The Jaguars tied the score in the top of the fifth inning after scoring two runs.

In the top of the sixth inning, David Gomez was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Gabriel Ramirez pinch ran for Gomez, and then later came around to score after Avery Pope drew a bases-loaded walk.

Ricky Gonzalez hit a two-run double, and then Carlos Reyes hit a run-scoring single to cap the five-run inning.

Gonzalez ended 2-for-4 with two RBIs, three runs and a stolen base; Reyes went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run; Robert Figueroa went 2-for-4 with a RBI; and Cameron Stinnett went 2-for-3 with a RBI.

Prep Softball: Granite Hills hands Academy for Academic Excellence its first loss of season

Figueroa picked up the victory on the mound with 5 2/3 innings of work. He allowed four runs on four hits and struck out six batters.

Luke Beasley started for Hesperia Christian and allowed four earned runs on six hits, to go along with seven strikeouts. Gabe Sanchez took the loss as he allowed two earned runs over two innings in relief.

The teams will square off again Friday afternoon at University Prep.

Prep Baseball

Sultana High School 22, Hesperia High School 6

At Hesperia, LJ Borrego and Brayden Booth both slugged a home run to lead the charge against the Scorpions on Wednesday.

Booth led the offense by going 3-for-5 with six RBIs and two runs; Borrego went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and four runs; Brody Sappington went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs and a stolen base; Geoffrey Rodrigues went 3-for-6 with a RBI and three runs; Alex Gamez went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and four runs.

For Hesperia, Andrew Gutierrez went 2-for-4 with a run, and Dru Lona went 2-for-3 with a run.

Both teams are back in action Friday afternoon. Hesperia (8-7, 0-4 MRL) is home against Oak Hills, while Sultana (12-2, 3-1 MRL) is on the road against Apple Valley.

Oak Hills High School 6, Serrano High School 0

At Oak Hills, Austin Allan allowed just one hit as the Bulldogs shutout the Diamondbacks and remained atop the Mojave River League standings.

Allan only allowed a double to Eric Sotelo in the first inning. He ended with nine strikeouts.

Keith Williams hit a home run and drew three walks; Paul Montoya went 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a stolen base; and Connor Wagner went 2-for-3 with a run.

Both teams are back in action Friday. Oak Hills (10-5, 4-0 MRL) is on the road against Hesperia, and Serrano (6-7-1, 1-3 MRL) heads north to Burroughs.

Apple Valley High School 11, Burroughs High School 1

At Ridgecrest, the Sun Devils improved to 3-1 in Mojave River League action with a victory on the road Wednesday afternoon.

Ethan Doyle helped lead the way for Apple Valley by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs; Isaiah Reveron went 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs; and Beau Lloyd went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs.

Apple Valley (7-5, 3-1 MRL) hosts Sultana on Friday afternoon in a battle for second place in the league standings.

Adelanto High School 14, Victor Valley High School 3

At Victorville, the Saints racked up 19 hits in a big victory over the Jackrabbits to end the first round of Desert Sky League play on Tuesday afternoon.

Zach Viramontes led the offensive charge by going 4-for-5 with two RBIs. On the mound, Viramontes allowed one earned run on six hits and struck out seven batters.

Chris Espinoza went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs; Adam Guevara went 2-for-3 with three RBIs; and Jamall Dixon went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

The Saints (8-5, 4-0 DSL) host Riverside Prep on Thursday night, while Victor Valley (3-11, 1-2 DSL) hosts Silverado.

Silverado High School 7, Barstow High School 2

At Barstow, the Hawks improved to 2-1 in Desert Sky League action with a victory on the road against the Aztecs on Tuesday.

Jace Weiss tossed a complete game, struck out seven batters and allowed five hits. Silverado got three-hit performances from two players. Cole Murphy went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs and three stolen bases, and Brandon Chavez went 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run.

For Barstow, Steven Diaz went 2-for-4.

The Aztecs (5-9, 0-3 DSL) are home against Granite Hills on Thursday, while Silverado (5-7, 2-1 DSL) is on the road against Victor Valley.

Riverside Prep 10, Granite Hills High School 1

At Oro Grande, the Silver Knights picked up their 10th victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon.

Drew Herd tossed five innings and allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts.

Cayden Johnson led the offense by going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run; Cayman Pluma went 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base; Trent Bourgeois went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a stolen base; Isaiah Gomez went 2-for-3 with two runs and three stolen bases; and Adrian Jorge Jr. went 1-for-3 with a RBI, two runs and three stolen bases.

For Granite Hills, Van Skinner, Caden Wharton and Cole Estes each had a hit.

Both teams are back in action Thursday. Granite Hills (5-9, 1-2 DSL) is on the road against Barstow, while Riverside Prep (10-3) is at Adelanto for a night game.

Prep Golf

At Apple Valley, Academy of Careers & Exploration’s Nate Carlson ended a stroke under par over nine holes in the second Cross Valley League match of the season Tuesday.

On the Sycamore course at Ashwood Golf Course, Carlson shot a 32 to lead ACE to a team score of 210. Big Bear finished with 254, good for second place.

Bryce Johnson finished three strokes behind his teammate with a 35, and Cody Grounds finished with a 37.

The next CVL match is set for Thursday afternoon at Hesperia Golf & Country Club.

Sultana High School 14, Burroughs High School 3

At Hesperia, Savannah Vanderpool struck out 12 batters and allowed three runs on five hits over six innings to lead the Sultans past the Burros on Wednesday afternoon.

At the plate, Vanderpool went 3-for-4 with five RBIs.

Maria Perez went 3-fo- 4 with three RBIs and two runs; Isabella Avalos went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run; Jordan Mullinax went 2-for-4 with two runs; and Katelyn Parrish hit a two-run home run.

Sultana (10-5, 1-0 MRL) is on the road for a double-header against Arbor View on Friday afternoon.

Adelanto High School 11, Excelsior Charter 10

At Adelanto, Zoe Rodriguez hit a walk-off double to score Lexie Rivera and cap a nine-run rally for the Saints on Wednesday afternoon.

Excelsior led 10-2 after the top of the sixth inning. But the Saints struck for five runs in the bottom half of the inning, and then four in the seventh.

Four Adelanto players each collected a pair of hits. Taylor Fullwood went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs; Ce’onie Turner went 2-for-4 with three runs and a stolen base; Monica Flores went 2-for-4 with a RBI, a run and a stolen base; Kylie Castanon went 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base.

For Excelsior, Tristen Gonzales went 1-for-2 with two walks, a RBI and two runs; Evangeline Archuleta went 1-for-3 with a RBI, three runs and two stolen bases; and Samantha Minghelli went 1-for-4 with a RBI, two runs and a stolen base.

Excelsior (8-6) is back in action Friday at home against ACE, while Adelanto (9-6, 2-2 DSL) has a doubleheader on Saturday morning against CIMS and Rialto.

Barstow High School 9, Silverado High School 4

At Victorville, Mariah Rodriguez slugged two home runs to help lead the Aztecs past the Hawks on Tuesday afternoon.

Rodriguez, the 2023 Daily Press Female Athlete of the Year, ended 3-for-3 with two walks, five RBIs and three runs. Chloe Bledsoe went 3-for-4 with a run; Alyssa Ramsey went 2-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base; and Marley Zamora allowed one earned run on six hits over seven innings.

For Silverado, Haylee Stanislawski went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, and Hannah Stanislawski went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Both teams are back in action Thursday afternoon. Silverado (2-8, 0-3 DSL) is home against Victor Valley, while Barstow (8-6, 3-0 DSL) heads to Granite Hills in a battle for first place in the standings.

Adelanto High School 12, Victor Valley High School 10

At Adelanto, the Saints improved to 2-2 in Desert Sky League action with a victory over the Jackrabbits on Tuesday afternoon.

Oak Hills High School 14, Apple Valley High School 4

At Apple Valley, the Bulldogs improved to 6-0 on the season in the Mojave River League opener on Tuesday afternoon as Sebastian Amato swept in singles action.

In doubles action, Herman Velasco and Dave Logan swept with three bagels. The Bulldogs also got sweeps from the doubles teams of Hayden Christensen and Kanoah Pascua, and Josue Soto and Angel Sierra.

Oak Hills is back in action at Burroughs on Wednesday.

Silverado High School 11, Victor Valley High School 7

At Victorville, the Hawks improved to 4-0 in Desert Sky League action with a victory over the Jackrabbits on the road.

Silverado got sweeps in doubles action from the teams of Donovan Smith and Mark Maradiaga, and Andrew Solis and David Ayala.

The Hawks are back in action on March 25 at home against Adelanto.

Oak Hills dominates against Apple Valley

At Oak Hills, the Bulldogs cruised to victory in the Mojave River League opener on Tuesday afternoon.

In girls action, Kayla Washington won four events. She ran a leg on the 4x100 relay team, and took first in the 100 and 200 meter races, as well as the 100 meter hurdles.

Sadie Sherrod won both distance races, and Annabel Ledezma took both throwing events.

In boys action, Amantea Howard took first place in both hurdles races and the long jump.

For Apple Valley, Dustin Cook won both of the distance races.
