High Desert Sports Roundup: Oak Hills kicks off MRL play with a victory over Apple Valley

The Oak Hills baseball team began the quest of repeating as Mojave River League champion with a big victory over Apple Valley on Friday afternoon.

Paul Montoya delivered five innings on the mound to pick up the win as the Bulldogs won 5-3 at home.

Montoya, who was voted the Victorville Chevrolet Athlete of the Week, allowed one earned run on six hits and three walks to go along with eight strikeouts.

Oak Hills jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Connor Wagner reached base on an error. Jacob Webster laced a double to drive in Wagner.

The Sun Devils tied up the game 1-1 in the top of the third inning after Noah Celie scored on a wild pitch.

It didn’t last long as the Bulldogs tacked three runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning.

Apple Valley pulled within a run in the fifth inning after scoring twice. But Oak Hills scored one run in the bottom of the inning for the 5-3 lead.

Austin Allan picked up the save with two scoreless innings in relief. He allowed two hits and struck out three batters.

Wagner ended the day by going 2-for-3 with two runs, and Webster went 1-for-1 with a walk, an RBI and two runs.

Beau Lloyd started for the Sun Devils and allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out six batters. At the plate, Lloyd went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Ryan Martinez went 3-for-4 with a run.

Apple Valley (4-5, 0-1 MRL) is back in action Monday at home against Victor Valley Christian and then hosts Serrano on Wednesday afternoon to resume league play. Oak Hills (6-5, 1-0 MRL) is on the road Wednesday at Sultana.

Prep Baseball

Sultana 15, Burroughs 0

At Hesperia, Eric Ruiz drove in six runs to lead the offense for the Sultans in the Mojave River League opener on Friday afternoon.

Ruiz ended 4-for-4 and also scored two runs. Alex Gamez went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, three runs and a stolen base; Dominic Williams went 2-for-3 with one RBI, two runs and a stolen base; and LJ Borrego went 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and two runs.

Nico Torres picked up the win with five innings of work. He allowed one hit and struck out eight batters. Brody Sappington allowed two hits and struck out three batters over two innings.

For Burroughs, Chasen Scott went 2-for-3 with a double.

Sultana (10-1, 1-0 MRL) is back in action Wednesday afternoon at home against Oak Hills.

AAE 10, Mammoth 5

At Apple Valley, five different players racked up two hits in a big victory for the Knights on Friday.

Christian Garcia went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs; Micah Moyer went 2-for-3 with three runs and two stolen bases; Gavin Ripley went 2-for-4 with a run and two stolen bases; Garrett Morrison went 2-for-3 with an RBI; and Kameron Walker ended 2-for-3.

Silver Valley 15, Desert 9

At Edwards, the Trojans improved to 3-3 on the season with a victory on the road on Friday afternoon.

Jaden Sassone led the offense by going 3-for-4 with an RBI, two runs and a stolen base; Joseph Rippey went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs; and Spencer McKeon went 1-for-3 with an RBI, two runs and a stolen base.

Silver Valley is back in action Monday at home against Hesperia Christian.

Silverado 10, Granite Hills 6

At Victorville, the Hawks beat the Cougars in the Desert Sky League opener on Thursday afternoon.

Brandon Chavez had a big day at the plate for Silverado. He went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a run and two stolen bases.

Devin Lane went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run and a stolen bases; Jayden Crespo went 1-for-1 with two RBIs and a run; and Uriel Martin went 1-for-3 with a run and two stolen bases.

For Granite Hills, Seth Christensen went 3-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base; Caden Wharton went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a run and a stolen base; Kameron Tillis-Henriquez went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run; and Jordan Dalton went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases.

Granite Hills (4-7, 0-1 DSL) is back in action Tuesday at home against Adelanto, while Silverado (4-5, 1-0 DSL) heads to Riverside Prep.

Adelanto 6, Barstow 4

At Adelanto, Chris Espinoza struck out 12 batters in a complete game to lead the Saints in the season opener on Thursday afternoon.

Espinoza allowed two earned runs on five hits and three walks. At the plate, Espinoza went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.

Aaron Rodriguez reached base three times on a triple, a walk and a hit by a pitch; Jesse Najera went 1-for-1 with a squeeze-bunt RBI and also reached by with a walk and was hit by a pitch; and Zach Viramontes went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Adelanto (5-5, 1-0 DSL) is back in action on the road against Granite Hills on Tuesday.

Academy of Careers & Exploration 380, Apple Valley 397

At Helendale, Nate Carlson set a course record Friday afternoon at Silver Lakes Country Club by shooting 11 strokes under par.

Carlson, a sophomore, ended with a score of 61 on the par-72 course to lead the Eagles past the Sun Devils. Carlson ended the day with 11 birdies.

“He’s been working hard on his putting and short game. He’s really been lights-out now that he has everything going,” ACE head coach Todd Lagergren said.

Jacob Hutchinson also ended under par, as he shot a 71.

For Apple Valley, Brody Earnest shot a 73, while Brady Fonville followed right behind at 74.

Both teams are back in action Monday morning at Bear Valley Country Club for the Oak Hills tournament.

Granite Hills 14, Silverado 4

At Apple Valley, the Cougars snapped a 36-game losing streak to the Hawks with a mercy-rule victory at home in the Desert Sky League opener on Thursday.

Silverado’s winning streak ran from 2011 through 2023. Granite Hills exploded for nine runs in the sixth inning for the mercy-rule victory.

Mia Vazquez led the way for the Cougars in the circle and at the plate. Vazquez struck out six batters and allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks. At the plate, she went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run.

Mylie Shepard went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, three runs and a stolen base; Emily Marks went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run; and Saylor Croom went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.

For Silverado, Alex Valdez went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run; Janaeh Silva went 2-for-3 with two runs; and Alexis Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Silverado (2-5, 0-1 DSL) is back in action on March 12 at home against Apple Valley, while Granite Hills (7-4-1, 1-0 DSL) heads to Adelanto.

Barstow 13, Adelanto 1

At Barstow, the Aztecs beat the Saints in the Desert Sky League opener on Thursday afternoon.

Riley Purdy helped lead the way for Barstow by going 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, three runs and a stolen base; Alyssa Ramsey went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base; Brooke Miller went 2-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases; and Mariah Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

For Adelanto, Alyah Vidana went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Adelanto (6-4) heads to AAE on March 11, while Barstow (3-3, 1-0 DSL) hosts Victor Valley on March 12.

Silverado 13, AAE 5

At Victorville, the Hawks improved to 2-0 in Desert Sky League action with a victory over the Knights on Thursday.

Silverado got sweeps in singles action from Christian Sauceda (6-2, 6-1, 6-0) and Ricardo Lemuz (6-3, 6-2, 6-1), as well as from the doubles team of David Ayala and Andrew Solis (6-3, 6-1, 6-1).

“It was a good win today. The boys played smart and with consistency,” Silverado head coach Bill Mocharnuk said.

The Hawks (5-1-1) are back in action on Tuesday at Adelanto.
