Hesperia’s Jorge Negrete is the Victorville Chevrolet High School Athlete of the Week

There were 94,204 votes cast this week and it was a landslide for the Victorville Chevrolet High School Athlete of the Week poll winner.

Hesperia’s Jorge Negrete ended with 36.26% of total votes casted by Daily Press readers.

The soccer star received 34,160 votes, beating out seven other high school athletes from across the High Desert.

To earn a spot on the ballot, Jorge scored both goals for the Scorpions in a 2-0 victory over Adelanto on Nov. 28.

Jorge followed that up with two more goals in a 5-3 loss to Oak Park on Dec. 1.

In the voting, Jorge beat out Oak Hills girls soccer’s Aliyah Casillas, who finished with 24.94% at 23,497 total votes.

Aaliyah scored three goals to help lead the Bulldogs to victory in the season opener on Nov. 30. Oak Hills beat Silverado 7-0 as the freshman recorded the hat trick.

Gabriel Garcia, a wrestler from Oak Hills, finished in third place with 11.87% at 11,184 total votes.

The nominees were selected based on performances between Nov. 27 through Dec. 2.

Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.

Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week's games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.
