Here's why KHSAA board says Kentucky high school basketball won't add shot clock for games

LEXINGTON Ky. — High school basketball in Kentucky won’t include a shot clock any time soon.

During Wednesday’s Board of Control meeting, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association released a survey of member schools in which a majority voted against adding a 35-second shot clock.

The vote was 137-100 against for boys basketball and 141-91 against for girls basketball.

“It was pretty clear that the majority of the schools do not favor going to a shot clock,” KHSAA commissioner Julian Tackett said.

Seventeen states currently have a shot clock for high school basketball — Arkansas, California, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah and Washington.

Tackett indicated the KHSAA could survey schools on the issue in future years. While administrators have expressed concerns about the costs associated with adding a shot clock, Tackett said there also are competition considerations.

“In talking to a number of the girls coaches, their opinion on that will change every year based on their point guard,” Tackett said. “They admit that.”

The state wrestling championships will return to Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington in 2024 and 2025 and will revert to a one-weekend format.

For the past three years, the KHSAA has used a semistate round to pare down competitors before reaching the final rounds at George Rogers Clark High School.

In the new format, the top four finishers in each weight class in each of the state’s eight regions will advance to the state championships. The three-day event will include two days of competition for boys and one day for girls.

The KHSAA voted earlier this year to add a girls wrestling championship starting with the 2023-24 school year.

Placement of new Louisville schools

The KHSAA tabled a discussion about district and regional assignments for two new schools in Louisville — W.E.B. DuBois and Grace James.

Tackett also brought up the possibility of a complete realignment of the Sixth and Seventh regions as a result, but no action was taken.

Addition of championships

The KHSAA voted to sponsor state championships for team tennis during the 2023-24 school year. For the 2024-25 school year, the KHSAA will begin championships for boys volleyball and boys and girls lacrosse, pending results of a final participation survey.
