Vote now: Who is the Herald-Times Athlete of the Week for Jan. 8-13?

Championship season in high school sports is heating up and so there are plenty of nominees for Herald-Times Athlete of the Week for Jan. 8-13.

Congrats to last week's winner, Bloomington South boys' basketball player Vince Moutardier, who received 36.6% of the vote (14,319) to edge Owen Valley girls' basketball player Hannah Bixler (27.6%).

Remember, vote as often as desired until Thursday at 5 p.m. Here are this week's nominees:

Austin Boltinghouse, Owen Valley wrestling

Freshman (21-11) won his first Western Indiana Conference title, opening with a 15-0 tech fall then getting pat South Putnam's Noah Redman (27-6), 8-6 and finally taking down top-seed Jason Glosser of Cloverdale with a pin in 5:40 for the title.

Wyatt Cooksey, South wrestling

Sophomore (25-5) ran through the field at 144 pounds in the Conference Indiana Tournament to win his first league title. Had a pin in 2:17, then a 10-0 major over his foe from Terre Haute South before beating Ricky Sanders of Southport, 8-5, in a championship match that was tied 4-4 going into the last 1:30. Had a 5-4 win earlier in the week in a dual against Columbus East.

Sophomore had two huge nights, starting with a 24-point, 17-rebound outburst in a 61-47 win over Monrovia, then had 21 points and seven boards in a 57-43 win over Owen Valley, hitting two 3-pointers that helped the Mustangs pull away from a tie game.

Derrick Cross, North boys basketball

The freshman point guard had a strong weekend in two wins for the Cougars. He started off with 12 points and six assists in a 69-47 win at Martinsville, going 3-for-3 from the field and 6-of-6 at the line. He followed that up with a 15-point outing, to go with four assists and two steals in an 87-69 win over Evansville North. He was 3-for-3 on 3-pointers and 5-of-7 overall.

Sofie Garcia, North gymnastics

Opening her season in a big way with three strong performances, earning the all-around title in each meet. Had a 35.375 in the County meet, winning floor (9.075) and bars (9.25). Had a 36.75 in a win over Columbus North, winning bars (9.2) and beam (9.2) and second on floor (9.35). Then took the title at the Franklin Central Invitational with a 36.825 and was top three in each event, winning bars (9.275) and beam (9.425) and third on vault (9.025) and floor (9.1).

Chloe Gautier, South gymnastics

Sophomore's high school debut week was a strong one. Was fourth in the all-around in her first meet with a 33.525, finishing in the top six on all four events. Came in seventh at the Franklin Central Invitational (33.775)and was fourth on vault (8.85) and seventh on floor (8.625).

Keylee Hudson, Eastern Greene girls basketball

Senior had 19 points to help the T-Birds get past Mitchell, 53-32, then had a 33-point outburst with nine rebounds and five assists in a 65-51 win at 4A Greenwood. In doing so, she became the all-time leading scorer at Eastern Greene with 1,110 points.

David Kovacs, South boys swimming

Junior broke two Counsilman Classic meet records belonging to former standouts Ian Finnerty and Max Irwin to help the Panthers win the team title 103-80. Went 1:53.35 to break Irwins' record in the 200 individual medley and 46.65 to take down Finnerty's mark in the 100 freestyle. Was also on the winning 200 medley relay and 400 free relay teams.

Michael Neidigh, Edgewood wrestling

Mustang dominated at 150 pounds at the Western Indiana Conference Tournament. Started with a pin in 28 seconds and followed with a 16-0 tech fall over Jordan Pulzone of South Putnam then finished with a pin in 1:34 of Owen Valley's Lucas McBee for the title. Also had a 9-1 major in the dual at Bloomington North.

Freshman won two races and helped a relay to another win in the Panthers' team victory over North at the Counsilman Classic. Won the 200 individual medley in 2:21.35 and then took the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.76. Was also a part of the winning 200 medley relay.
