Megan Hecht has her reservations about moving on to the next level.

The recent Sturgis High School graduate knows there will be some butterflies – some she has already experienced – but that’s just part of the game. Hecht signed with Kalamazoo Valley Community College to continue both her academic and volleyball careers. She said getting on campus and experiencing what KVCC had to offer was a big pull for her.

“To be honest, when I went on tour there, I really enjoyed it,” Hecht said. “I just felt like I wasn’t done playing volleyball yet.”

Hecht was a four-year varsity volleyball player during her time at Sturgis. She said there are some parallels from her time there to starting over at the college level with KVCC.

“It was intense going from eighth grade, playing volleyball and then jumping up to varsity,” she said. “I expect this will kind of be like that. The jump from varsity to college should be intense but I’m looking forward to it.”

Following the completion of her senior season at Sturgis, Hecht said she was looking at her options for the next level. Part of growing up is moving along in life and Hecht said she took some time to weigh those options, but in the end decided continuing her volleyball career was something she really aspired to do.

“It was after the season, I was kind of nervous for college because it’s such a big choice,” she said. “But I knew I had to go one of two ways. I could go to a bigger university and jump into it or I could go and play somewhere. I decided that was the best option to continue my education because I decided I wanted to keep playing.”

When it comes to the classroom, Hecht said she has that planned accordingly. She aspires to have a career in education, especially with youngsters. This past spring semester, Hecht did an internship at Congress School in Sturgis and worked with second graders on a daily basis.

She said while the classroom followed the same schedules daily, every day was also different, which made it fun.

“I love all the kids, I’ve grown relationships with them and it was so much fun to be a part of that,” Hecht said.

Time management skills are an important part of being a collegiate athlete. Hecht said her senior year helped build on her already strong skills in that area. With going to school, having a job and playing sports, including travel volleyball, it was a lot to juggle. But over the years she has grown to be better at it, even when she is busy.

As the summer winds down and her college career nears, Hecht has both excitement and nervous feelings. It’s normal for a person in her position, but she also knows it will be a test.

“I’m nervous, but also I’m excited for all of it,” she said. “It’s a big step going from like a zero to 100 type of way. I’m excited to see how it all plays out.”
