Heat's Waiters (ankle) might opt for season-ending surgery
Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters is considering season-ending surgery on his injured left ankle, according to published reports.
Waiters, 26, has missed the past nine games because of the injury, including Wednesday night's contest against the Pacers. He is averaging 14.3 points per game in 30 starts during his second season with Miami.
The former Syracuse shooting guard has received multiple medical opinions on his ankle, according to the Miami Herald. Waiters was limited to 46 games last season after playing 70-plus games in each of the previous three campaigns.
A clause in Waiters' contract could sway his decision to undergo season-ending surgery rather than wait until the offseason. Waiters is due to receive a $1.1 million bonus if he plays at least 70 games this season. To reach that incentive, he would have to play in 40 of Miami's final 41 games, which is unlikely given his current status and might lead him to make a decision soon.
