Hayden duo wins back-to-back state titles; Here are the results from state tennis

The Hayden Catholic duo is on top of the podium once again. Lauren Sandstrom and Emily Sheetz came away with the doubles state championship in Class 4A on Saturday, Oct. 14. They finished the year with a 33-3 doubles record. Over the course of the past two seasons, the Wildcats duo has a combined record of 66-7.

Hayden ended in fourth place in the team completion with 20 points as Independence took the team title with 37 points in Class 4A. Hayden’s Grace Funk helped the team total by taking 11th place in the singles completion.

Class 5A

Shawnee Heights’ Jette Glasenapp finished as the runner-up in the singles division. Glasenapp dropped just one set en route to the state title match. But she was upended by Bishop Carroll’s Brynn Steven 6-0, 6-4. Glasenapp was the only qualifier for the Thunderbirds, but she helped Shawnee Heights finish in a tie for sixth place in the team standings.

Seaman secured fifth place in the Class 5A standings. The Vikings scored 15 points as Andover took the team championship with 49 points. Katie Krumins and Molly Gorman earned seventh place in the doubles competition. Kate Eckert and Camryn Lux finished in 12th place as a doubles pair, too. In singles, Emma Sweeney secured 11th place to give Seaman four team points.

Class 6A

Washburn Rural came away in a tie for fifth place at the state tournament. The Junior Blues earned 16 points while Shawnee Mission East took the title with 53 points. Claire Ireland and Gabby Martinez earned eighth place in doubles. Carolina Alvarez Chedzoy went alone and also secured eighth place in singles.

Three Topeka High School members also qualified for the state meet, but they did not score any points. McCall Beall, Siena Boiteau and Ava Ritter represented the Trojans at the state championship.
