CHAMPAIGN — Illinois wrestling's bid to upset No. 3 Iowa on Friday at Huff Hall started well enough.
The Illini were competitive in the first two matches of the Big Ten dual, with Tony Madrigal (133 pounds) and Will Baysingar (141) sustaining evenly fought losses to Cullan Schriever and Brody Teske. Madrigal lost 9-1, while Baysingar took a 5-0 defeat.
But after Kannon Webster (149) earned an overtime 4-1 win over Caleb Rathgen in the third match to cut Illinois' deficit to 7-3, the Hawkeyes pulled away en route to a 36-6 win. Illini coach Mike Poeta declined comment after the match.
The setback — Illinois' fourth in a row following a 22-9 loss to Pittsburgh on Dec. 3, a 29-6 loss to Missouri on Dec. 21 and a 36-6 loss to Ohio State on Jan. 12 — dropped Illinois' record to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in conference matches.
Gold and black was especially abundant in the lower level of bleachers, as when Iowa's Jared Franek's technical fall victory at 157 pounds elicited a standing ovation from the Hawkeye faithful.
There were more visiting fans in the southwest balcony behind Iowa's radio announcers. They had reason to cheer when Michael Caliendo earned a 17-2 tech fall win over Illinois' Chris Moore to boost the Hawkeyes lead to 17-3.
Illinois' contingent — which filled much of Huff's upper level — didn't have much to cheer for the rest of the night as the Hawkeyes (9-0) claimed four of the final five matches.
Edmond Ruth (174) suffered his second loss of the season in a 5-1 decision to Patrick Kennedy.
Illinois (3-5) bounced back in the next match. Dylan Connell (184) led Aiden Riggins 1-0 after two periods before Riggins tied the match with a quick escape and forced overtime. Connell gained a point shortly after the fourth frame started to win 4-1.
Zach Glazier (197) and Bradley Hill (285) earned wins via an 18-3 tech fall and pinfall, respectively, over Joey Braunagel and Peter Marinopoulos before Drake Ayala (125) dealt former Centennial standout Justin Cardani an 18-3 loss by tech fall to put a bow on the Hawkeyes' fourth conference win of the season.
Iowa's victory marked its tenth win in a row against Illinois, which last defeated the Hawkeyes on Jan. 28, 2005 at Huff Hall.
Illinois' final two home matches are at State Farm Center, with Michigan State due to visit on Feb. 2.
