Hartland one win from KLAA West girls soccer title

Hartland rediscovered its scoring touch to move one step closer to its first KLAA West girls soccer championship in 10 years.

After playing two straight scoreless draws, the Eagles won a 5-3 free-for-all against Novi Thursday night.

First-place Hartland is 9-1-3 in the KLAA West for 30 points with one game remaining Tuesday at Plymouth. Second-place Canton is 7-1-4 for 25 points with two games left against Howell and Salem.

Salem (6-2-5) was knocked out of contention by Brighton, which battled the Rocks to a 0-0 tie.

The Eagles won a state Division 1 championship three years ago, but haven’t won their division since winning three consecutive titles from 2012-14.

After allowing a goal less than two minutes into the game, Hartland responded with three straight goals by the midway mark of the first half. Alyse Daavettila set up goals by Claire L’Esperance and Paige Sundman before Bella Hammond scored from Addie Frantti.

Novi cut the margin to 3-2 before halftime, but Gracie Kastamo and Josie Cheyne scored seven minutes apart to seal the victory.

“We’ve only scored one goal in our last three games, a win and two 0-0 ties,” Hartland coach Andrew Kartsounes said. “It was important for us to score some goals.

“We were just connecting better, creating more chances. According to my assistant coach, we took something like 30 shots and maybe have 15, 16 on frame. We created a lot, we got some on frame and did a good job of finishing a few.”

Brighton 0, Salem 0

Freshman Anna Brown-Nall had four saves for Brighton (8-4-4).
