Harrison, Ryle headline high school wrestling postseason storylines

State championship duals in Ohio and regional bouts in Kentucky have already been decided, marking the dwindling wrestling seasons in the states.

Here are four storylines from the weekend of Feb. 9-Feb. 11 that will shape the rest of the wrestling season.

1. Which team won Kentucky wrestling's Region 5 in 2024?

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association's boys regional tournaments kicked off with Ryle dominating the Region 5 meet.

The Raiders took first in the Region 5 tournament with 246.5 points, eclipsing runner-up Walton-Verona by 49 points. Five Raiders finished as regional champs and another three finished as runner-up.

Luke Cornwell (106 pounds), Landon Evans (120), Rider Trumble (150), Caleb Duke (175) and Travis Steiber (190) were the Raiders who stood atop the podiums. Seth Page (126), Jagger Irvin (132) and Callen Schmidt (157) placed second.

2. Which 2024 wrestlers won their weight classes in Kentucky Region 5?

Other winners in the boys Region 5 tournament included wrestlers from Conner, Simon Kenton, Walton-Verona, Campbell County, Highlands and Cooper.

3. How did La Salle and Springboro wrestling finish in the Ohio state duals?

La Salle and Springboro were two of the eight teams to reach the state tournament of the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association state duals at Lakewood St. Edward on Feb. 10. Both schools dropped their first-round matches, but both also finished their runs with victories.

The Lancers fell to eventual third-place finisher Brecksville in the opening round, 39-25. Down in the consolation brackets, La Salle rebounded with a 58-24 victory against Findlay to set up a fifth-place match with Olentangy Liberty.

The Lancers edged Liberty 36-34 to take fifth overall. In the match, La Salle took seven classes with one forfeit win and four pins.

Springboro dropped its first two matches of the day, falling to Dublin Coffman 43-18 and Olentangy Liberty 42-23, but ran through Findlay 57-12 in the seventh-place bout.

4. Which Cincinnati girls wrestling team won the 2024 OHSWCA state duals title?

Marysville High School hosted the girls Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association state tournament, where the Harrison Wildcats secured the duals state title with more trophies potentially on the horizon.

The defending Ohio High School Athletic Association state champions started their postseason run for this year by picking up the duals title thanks to a pinfall victory by Jess Edwards in the final match against Olentangy Orange.

Lebanon also competed at the state duals, placing eighth.
