Harbor Springs girls XC earns win in Shepherd, Charlevoix volleyball tops Onaway Invite
SHEPHERD — The state championships for cross country are still a ways off yet for the high school season.
But when it comes to tests and getting prepared to get to that final race of the season, there might be no better place to do that than the annual Shepherd Bluejay Invite.
With four separate divisions, more than 20 schools in each and well over 1,000 runners competing on the day, the race is always one of the state’s biggest.
Once again, a number of teams from the area made the trip, with the Harbor Springs girls making it more than worthwhile with a Jays Division overall win.
The Harbor girls just edged out Ithaca for the victory, while the Harbor boys also earned a third place finish.
In the Elite race, Petoskey placed 12th on the boys side and girls earned a 15th place finish, with both races featuring more than 30 programs. Charlevoix was also 11th on the boys side of the Gold race and the girls placed 18th.
For Harbor Springs, Stefi Reskevics led the way with a third place finish in 19 minutes, 42.2 seconds. Juniper Rodham also placed eighth (20:19), Fan Warren was 14th (21:49) and McKenzie Bowman, 15th (21:57).
For the Harbor boys, Trevor Clarke palmed 15th (17:44), Logan Kihnke was 16th (17:50); Adam Ferguson, 19th (17:57) and Max Vroman, 29th (18:22).
While the places look off for Petoskey, they did race above their usual competition and were actually third among Division 2 programs on the boys side and sixth for D2 schools for the girls.
CamBrie Corey and Nora O’Leary ran season-best times in 42nd (19:11) and 48th (19:18), respectively, while Ava Pawlick was also 65th (19:46).
Also within the Elite race on the girls side was Petoskey St. Michael runner Jane Manthei, who finished in 41st with a time of 19:11.5, crossing the line in the same exact time as Corey.
For the Petoskey boys, all five scorers ran a personal best on the day, led by Shane Izzard in a 19th place finish, making him the lone medalist in 15:50.2.
Also for Petoskey, Tommy Farley placed 45th (16:19); Jack Lindwall, 58th (16:30); Zahar Rush, 96th (16:58); and Simon Licata, 136th (17:21).
The final area team to participate on the day was Charlevoix within the Gold race, with the boys led by Hunter Eaton with a strong 24th place finish in 16:40.7.
David Dhaseleer also placed 53rd (17:27) and Mathew Solomon, 58th (17:32).
