What happened the 6 other times Jets, Giants drafted back-to-back?

The 2022 draft will be incredibly important for the Jets and the Giants. Both teams own two top-10 picks and have glaring needs across the roster.

Coincidentally, this will also be the seventh time since 1967 the two New York teams will make back-to-back selections and only the second time the Jets will pick first. Gang Green has the No. 4 pick, while Big Blue has the No. 5 pick. The Giants will pick again at No. 7 and the Jets will draft again No. 10.

Here’s how the teams’ previous consecutive picks fared:

Similar to this year, the Jets picked fourth and the Giants picked fifth in the 1977 draft. That year, Gang Green picked offensive tackle Marvin Powell, while Blue Blue took defensive end Gary Jeter. Powell played nine years in New York and made five consecutive Pro Bowls from 1979-1983. He finished his career in Tampa Bay. Jeter, meanwhile, played six years with the Giants, six with the Rams and one with the Patriots.

The Giants grabbed a Hall of Famer in linebacker Lawrence Taylor with the second overall pick in 1981, while the Jets took a solid running back in Freeman McNeil. Taylor went on to make 10 Pro Bowls, eight All-Pros, three Defensive Player of the Year Awards and won an AP MVP award during his 13-year career. McNeil enjoyed a great 12-year career with the Jets, making three Pro Bowls and one All-Pro. He is second on the Jets’ all-time rushing yards list with 8,074.

The Giants and Jets took tight ends with back-to-back picks at Nos. 14 and 15 in the 1992 draft. The Giants selected Derek Brown, while the Jets grabbed Johnny Mitchell. Brown only caught 11 receptions for 87 yards in three years with the Giants before finishing his career with the Jaguars, Raiders and Cardinals. Mitchell played four years with the Jets and caught 158 receptions for 2,086 yards and 16 touchdowns.

The Giants took WR Ike Hillard seventh overall in 1997, followed by the Jets taking LB James Farrior with the eighth pick. Hillard played eight years with the Giants from 1997-2004, while Farrior only played five with the Jets before finishing his career with 10 seasons in Pittsburgh.

The Jets had four first-round picks in 2000, but their first selection and the one that immediately preceded the Giants’ pick was DE Shaun Ellis at No. 12. Ellis played 11 years with the Jets and finished with 72.5 sacks, good for third on the team’s all-time list. The Giants took RB Ron Dayne right before Ellis with the 11th pick. He played four years in New York before finishing his career in Denver and Houston.

2018

The Giants drafted RB Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick in 2018, right before the Jets took QB Sam Darnold with the third pick. Barkley won Offensive Rookie of the Year and rushed for over 1,000 yards during his first two seasons, but injuries have plagued his past two campaigns. Darnold, meanwhile, couldn’t overcome poor coaching, bad turnovers and a talent-deficient roster before the Jets traded him to the Panthers in 2021. His career hasn’t gone much better there.
