Hanging history: Limestone Historical society reorders rocket ornament
Feb. 29—This year, the Limestone County Historical Society is doing something that it doesn't usually do.
"Due to high demand, the Limestone County Historical Saturn Rocket Ornament was reordered and will go on sell Tuesday, March 5, at Osborne's Jewelry," Linda Nelson said on behalf of the society.
The society chooses a historic Limestone landmark, item or event to commemorate as a hanging ornament with its only fundraiser of the year. In 2023, the group chose the Saturn 1B rocket that had stood at the Ardmore Welcome Center for decades prior to being removed due to safety concerns earlier in 2023.
Nelson and the historical society want to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to get an ornament from this run.
"What happened the first time was that they sold out at Osborne's before it even came out in the paper," Nelson said.
The ornament will be accompanied by an insert with a brief history of the rocket and its importance to Limestone County, and the funds will go towards community projects, such as helping place historical markers and restoring cemeteries and their markers.
