Hampton Roads Hall of Fame’s latest inductees include Zimmerman, Vick and McCorory
Major league baseball player Ryan Zimmerman, NFL quarterback Michael Vick and track Olympian Francena McCorory highlight the Hampton Roads Hall of Fame’s 2023 induction class.
Zimmerman, Vick and McCorory will be inducted in a 7 p.m. ceremony Nov. 8 in the Big Blue Room at Old Dominion’s Chartway Arena in Norfolk along with high school football coach Tommy Reamon and longtime NBA referee Tony Brothers.
Zimmerman starred at Kellam High and was an All-American at Virginia before being selected by the Washington Nationals with the fourth pick in the 2005 draft. He played for the Nationals until his retirement in 2021, setting team records for hits, home runs, runs and RBIs. He helped Washington win the 2019 World Series and played in two all-star games.
Vick, who played at Ferguson and Warwick, starred at Virginia Tech and in the NFL, leading the Hokies to the 1999 national championship game before becoming the No. 1 pick in the 2001 NFL draft. Vick was a four-time Pro Bowler and holds NFL career records for quarterback rushing yards (6,109) and average yards per carry (7.0).
McCorory, who graduated from Bethel High School and Hampton University, won gold medals in the 4×400-meter relay at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. She also won bronze in the 400 at the 2011 World Championships. She won three national titles at HU and once held the American record in the indoor 400.
Reamon, a graduate of George Washington Carver High School in Newport News, was a two-time named National Junior College football player of the year before transferring to Missouri. He played in the NFL and World Football League, earning MVP honors in the WFL in 1974. Reamon coached Vick in high school, and has nearly 200 career wins at Ferguson, Warwick, Gloucester, Landstown and Denbigh.
Brothers, a Booker T. Washington High and ODU grad, has officiated more than 1,700 regular-season games and nearly 200 playoff games since reaching the NBA in 1994.
The hall of fame also will give its inaugural Dave Rosenfield Memorial Unsung Hero
Award to Kenny Magner, who is retiring after 50 years as a groundskeeper for the Norfolk Tides.
