Hampton 10-year-old gets baseball experience of lifetime at Colorado Rockies camp

HAMPTON — It started out as a regular trip to Denver, for Jameson Alcombright, and his mother, Heather, to visit Jameson's father, who lives in Colorado.

But the trip quickly turned into what the 10-year-old Jameson, who loves baseball, called one of his favorite experiences.

His mother already had tickets for a Major League Baseball game between the Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers, but she was exploring more fun baseball activities for Jameson to do while in Denver. She came across an opportunity for Jameson to attend a two-day camp Wednesday and Thursday at Coors Field, home of the Rockies.

"'Wow, I get to hang out with the pros'," Jameson said when learning about the camp. "I get to be on a big field."

There were about 200 kids in the 8-13 age group camp.

"Basically, the first half of the day, they do all skills training, so hitting, fielding, running, catching and fly balls," Heather explained. "They got to interact with the pitching and the hitting coach of the Colorado Rockies, so that was pretty cool."

Jameson, who has been playing baseball for about five years, plays a multitude of positions in the infield, outfield and pitcher. Jameson plays on the Seacoast Cal Ripken Seacoast Team and plays in the Hampton Youth Association league.

"It was really fun, I got to meet Ryan McMahon," Jameson said. McMahon is the Rockies starting third baseman. "We got into teams for two days and we played our games. There was a home run derby over a fence, it was just one of the best times of my life."

Jameson said the home run derby was his favorite activity.

"I learned a lot more about fielding and that kind of stuff, I learned a lot more about it," Jameson said.

"(It made me feel) really good," Heather said of seeing her son get this opportunity, "He battles with getting in his head and his confidence, so just having him have that experience with people who have the same battles is really good, and kind of getting his confidence level is important."
