HAMILTON - Steve Lubbers has been a fixture in the tennis community for decades.

He has led the Hamilton boys and girls to new heights and successfully rebuilt the program many times so it remains one of the state's best.

Lubbers was named Division 3 Girls Coach of the Year in the state of Michigan by the tennis coaches association.

He was also named regional coach of the year.

"It is quite an honor," Lubbers said. "To be voted amongst your peers and have fellow coaches think that of you means quite a bit to me."

Hamilton did not have its best year in school history, but the fact that the coaches saw the progress with the Hawkeyes means a lot to Lubbers.

"It is not always just based on one year necessarily. They don't just look at wins and losses, so that means a lot that the coaches see the actual progress," Lubbers said. "It gives the assurance that they see our program for what it is, not just wins and losses."

This is the 23rd season coaching at Hamilton for Lubbers, something he hopes to continue.

"I just really enjoy it. being with the kids," he said. "Teaching the sport and seeing the confidence and success means a lot. Seeing that look in their eye when they realize the can do it is what it is all about."
