CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine – Brody Gullison’s final game in a York High School football uniform did not go as planned – for him and his teammates.

The No. 5 Wildcats lost at No. 4 Cape Elizabeth on Monday, 41-6, to end the Class B South season at 2-7.

Gullison had a fine offensive game in the losing effort, rushing for 103 yards on 12 carries and scored York’s only TD – a 53-yard burst in the second quarter. At the time, it cut Cape’s lead to 22-6.

“It was a run to the left. I saw the hole was clogged. I bounced it to the right side,” he said. “I just saw it, turned on the jets and just booked it. … I definitely saw our offense improve at the end of the first half. We couldn’t finish.”

Before Gullison’s touchdown, York drove the ball deep into Cape territory to the 13. However an Alexander Taylor pass glanced off a receiver’s hands and right to Cape’s Logan McVeigh at the 4. He returned the ball to the York 40.

And then after York scored, Cape fumbled and the Wildcats had great field position on the Capers’ 28. They moved the ball to the 20, but could not get the necessary two yards for a first down, turning the ball over on downs.

Those two possessions hurt. Instead of maybe cutting the Cape lead to 22-14 at the break or tying the game, they ended up trailing 29-6 when the Capers added a late passing TD.

“Momentum really rolls with this team, and we really didn’t have any through that whole game,” Gullison said. “We never got the chance.”
