Great start for Peoria-area golfers on Day 1 of the IHSA boys and girls state finals

Three teams and nine individuals from the Peoria area will play on the final day of the Illinois High School Association boys and girls golf state finals across the state.

Peoria Notre Dame (341) is a shot out of the top three in the Class 1A girls team standings in Decatur, while Morton (357) is sixth. Mt. Carmel (307), Rockford Boylan (318) and Arlington Heights St. Viator (340) are the top three.

The top eight teams and 40 individuals in each event advance to Saturday's final round.

In Class 1A boys, DJ Norman shot a 4-over-76 to end his opening round in eighth place, carding four birdies on the front nine. The Roanoke-Benson senior recorded 1-under on the first, third, fourth and seventh holes at the Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington. Two of his birdies were back-to-back on the par-4 third and on the 518-yard par-5 fourth. He shot a 1-under-35 for those first nine holes.

Illini West (344) is tied for sixth in the 1A boys team standings. Chicago Latin (312) is the clubhouse leader.

In the Class 3A boys finals, Pekin senior Carter Stevenson shot 2-over-par and sits in 11th place overall at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington, four shots behind leader Andrew Schauenberg of Barrington.

In the Class 2A boys finals at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Galesburg senior Jason Runbom is in ninth place overall after a 4-over-par first round, three shots behind leader Charles Davenport of Lisle Benet. East Peoria sophomore Connor Watson shot 7-over par to sit in a tie for 29th place overall while Dunlap's Graham O'Leary shot 9-over par and is tied for 47th overall.

In the 1A girls finals in Decatur, Kewanee senior Mya Mirocha shot a 74 to tie for sixth place overall after the first round. Notre Dame's Addie Jennetten (78) had the low score for the Irish. Morton senior Reagan Braker (79) had the low score for Morton.

Other area individuals moving on to Day 2 in Class 1A were: El Paso-Gridley senior Sarah Bond (81) and Illini Bluffs senior Amelia Howard (93).

Pekin junior Sydney Hubner shot 77 and is tied for 29th in the Class 2A girls finals in Decatur.
