Grading the Brooklyn Nets’ offseason thus far
The Brooklyn Nets are in the midst of the summer league part of their schedule as they take on the New York Knicks on Sunday. However, it is a good time to review the Nets’ offseason so far and give a grade for the moves.
To start, Brooklyn had a solid draft by selecting three players who could be part of the rotation in the near future without much projection. Dariq Whitehead is probably the most interesting pick that the Nets made given what he could be if he fully recovers from his foot injury that plagued him during much of his freshman season at Duke.
Noah Clowney will probably be the first to be in the rotation since he fills a need for the Nets right away because of what he can provide as a stretch-big and backup to Nic Claxton if needed. Jalen Wilson has the most experience of the draftees, but since he signed a Two-Way contract, he will spend most of his time in the G League next season. However, Wilson looked good in his first game of summer league so that is a positive for him.
With regards to what the Nets have done outside of the draft, Brooklyn has taken care of the more important tasks. The Nets re-signed Cam Johnson, arguably their most important task of the season, and were able to add some guard depth in Lonnie Walker IV and Dennis Smith Jr.
The Nets lost some valuable players in Joe Harris, Seth Curry, and Patty Mills so that will be a lot of shooting to make up for. In all, the Nets appeared to have gained more than they have lost. The two remaining matters will be the health of Ben Simmons and if Brooklyn can pull off a trade for a star to make this team a championship contender.
