Golfers tee off season with practice round
Mar. 27—It was a most welcome chance to get out on the golf course for a "practice competition" that was a three-way meet in disguise.
No team scores were kept, none were needed. This was live golf against golfers other than teammates and it was a weather sneak on an otherwise wet and windy Sanders County day at the Wild Horse Plains Golf Course on the town's northern fringe.
"We did not score for competition, this was merely a practice round so the kids could get their feet under them," said Plains High golf coach Lisa Brown.
It was a great day and a great way to get the cobwebs off the course clubs and hit a few with friends, and competitors.
Thompson Falls, Superior and Plains golf teams got together for the event, which happened under a break in the cold, damp weather and a good round of golf for high school golf teams.
"It was a great way to start the 2024 golf season, with a pretty mild day of weather and a start to some baseline scorers for our golfers," said T Falls golf coach Doree Thilmony.
The meet was played under match play rules, meaning the golfers had to win the match against an opponent by winning the most holes out of nine holes, based on the low score after each hole.
This type of high school play is not the norm, but on this occasion and this beautiful day, it was no doubt a welcome distraction for the players from the three competing schools.
We appreciated Lisa Brown putting out this none-hole match play competition, as it was a nice start to the season where our new golfers had a little less stress and could learn the game better," Thilmony said.
Top scorers for T Falls were Sophia Chou, 44; Cael Thilmony, 48. Eighth grader Weston Block carded a nine hole 72 for the Blue Hawks.
