Golfers compete at conference tourney

Oct. 7—The Mountain 7 3A Conference girls golf championships are in full swing as Pisgah and Tuscola vie for honors.

The 45-hole tournament is spread over 10 days at three different venues.

Round one, an 18-hole contest, was played Oct. 4, at Springdale Golf Club and Resort.

Round two, a nine-hole shootout, was played Oct. 6, at Laurel Ridge Country Club. The final round, an 18-hole finale, will be played Oct. 10, at Etowah Valley Golf and Resort.

Round one of the conference championships found Tuscola solidly in second place behind Smoky Mountain, while Pisgah landed in fifth.

Tuscola's McKenna Williams took first place individually, and led her team to a team score of 308, shooting a 13-over-par round of 85.

Williams is out to defend her Conference Player of the Year award she won as a freshman last season.

Tuscola's pair of freshmen golfers, Josie Ostendorff and Haiden Woods, contributed to the team effort, posting scores of 110 and 113. Completing the scoring for Tuscola was Sakari Morgan (122) and Emma Arrington (130).

Pisgah scored a team total of 337 points, led by freshman Aloah Cox who scored a team-best 103. Cox was followed by Olivia Merrell (114), Savannah Ivester (120), Kensie Mathis (120) and Valentina Miguez (125).

Team championships are determined by adding the points together for the three day competition. Individual honors are calculated in the same way, adding the scores up for a three day total.
