Girls' track: Teams to watch at Tuesday's Bloomington North regional meet

Just one more step left to the state finals for area girls' track athletes, so here's what to keep an eye on at Tuesday's Bloomington North Regional:

Ready, set, go

On the clock: The meet will begin at 6 p.m. with field events and the 3,200 relay, then running trials at 6:30 and the running finals at 7:20. Tickets: $10, children 5 and under free. Results: Complete and live results will be available at bloomingtonnorthathletics.com.

Competitors: Meet will include qualifiers from the Bloomington, Madison, Seymour and Terre Haute sectionals.

Advancement: The top three in each event and any other individual or relay which meets the state standard will move on to the state finals on June 3 at Indiana University.

Pole position

North has nine No. 1 seeds, an incredible three by junior Dede Eberle in both hurdles and long jump, two from Hadley Lucas in the throws, one each from Sarah Elliott (100) and Nola Somers Glenn (800) and two relays (400 and 1,600). Lucas and Somers Glenn are defending regional champs in their events.

South has three No. 1s in Ellie Barada (800), Lily Myers (1,600) and the 3,200 relay, while Edgewood's Clara Crain is No. 1 in the 3,200. That left just three top seeds for non-Monroe County competitors: Kyarra DeGroote of West Vigo in the 200, a group of four tied at the top in high jump and Cali Wuestefeld of Terre Haute North in pole vault.

In all North has 13 top-three seeds coming in, South has eight, Edgewood three and Bedford North Lawrence (Mary Batz in the 400), Martinsville (Laura Barco in the 3,200), Paoli (Kyrsten Fehribach in the 300 hurdles), Orleans (Callie Alston in high jump) and Springs Valley (Sarah Drabing in discus) have one each. That makes the Cougars strong favorites to repeat as team regional champ and win a 10th overall title.

Other sectional champion teams coming in are Charlestown, Seymour (who each won a third in a row) and Northview, which won just its second title and first since 2001.

Statewide hype

According to results compiled by Indianarunner.com, a number of results from the Bloomington North site were among the best among all sectionals across the state.

Lucas' marks in the shot and discus were No. 1 statewide, while Somers Glenn's 800 was second only to the 2:09.24 by Park Tudor's Gretchen Farley. Eberle was second best in the 100 hurdles to Forest Park's Rachel Mehringer (14.00) and South's Myers was No. 3 and Edgewood's Crain No. 5 in the 1,600. Crain was fourth in the 3,200.

South's 3,200 relay was No. 10, North's 1,600 relay was 10th and its 400 relay was eighth. Linton's Becca Robbins was No. 8 in discus.

First for Lighthouse

Lighthouse Christian is in its third year as a fully participating member with the IHSAA and this year picked up its first regional qualifier for track in senior Madeline Esslinger, who was called up in the 200 and is seeded eighth.

"Very exciting," LCA coach Josh Henson said. "It's her favorite event, so she's very excited. She's put in a lot of hard work. We're a small school and we're not a big team so it gives the younger runners something to look forward to."

Esslinger, oddly enough, is one of the Lions' top cross country runners, having made it to regional in the fall.

"I think different people have different views on if it helps her," Henson said. "But she's a hard worker, so she makes it work. She likes to run so she just enjoys both of them and works really hard."

In all, competitors from the Bloomington North Sectional received 30 individual and six relay call-ups. By school: South 8, Linton 6, Edgewood 5, Eastern Greene 5, North 3, Martinsville 3, Brown County 2 and one each for Owen Valley, Lighthouse Christian, Shakamak and Bloomfield.

Other athletes to watch

The sprints will see West Vigo's Kyarra DeGroote again after she made state last year in the 100 and 200. She's seeded first in the 200, second in the 100 and 15th in the 400. Interestingly, the 100 and 200 defending champ Lyric Steele is not in the picture this year after transferring from Charlestown to Jeffersonville, having missed the whole outdoor season.

Paoli's Fehribach qualified in three events, both hurdles and high jump, an event she won at last year's regional at 5-5 while also taking second in the 300s.

Northview's Ellia Hayes, who was a runner up in the regional 1,600 the past two years, broke the WIC record with a 4:56.36 thi season. The Knights also had no seniors on last year's regional champion 3,200 relay. Seymour's Brooke Trinkle will be a factor for third year in a row, having won the regional title in 2021 and finishing third last year.

Edgewood's Ashley Abram, who struggled at sectional and needed a call-up to advance, and Terre Haute North's Cali Wuestefeld, went 1-2 at last year's regional in pole vault.

Eberle will have her hands full in the 300 hurdles. Last year, no competitor had a seed time under 48 seconds and only one, North's Ella Francis, broke 47 in the final. This year, there are seven who were under 48 at sectional.
